And the Olympics 2020 goes to... Tokyo!!!!

Avui ens hem llevat amb una bona, molt bona notícia al Japó! Com tothom ja deu saber a hores d'ara a la matinada nostra, Tokyo has estat escollida com la seu dels Jocs Olímpics 2020!! Desbancant Madrid i Istanbul la capital nipona tornarà a acollir els jocs olímpics d'estiu després dels de 1964, uns jocs que van ser crucials en el desenvolupament econòmic, urbanístic i tecnològic de la ciutat i del Japó en general. Pel que he llegit i he pogut escoltar va ser un impacte comparable als nostres estimats jocs de Barcelona'92 (per aquí és habitual que quan dius que ets de Barcelona encara et responguin "a sí...Olympics¨). Penseu que el primer Shinkansen (tren d'alta velocitat) es va posar en circulació el 1964 precisament per afavorir la connexió entre Tokyo i Kyoto-Osaka. A Tokyo es van construir multitud d'infraestructures des de transport públic (famosa línia de tren suspesa, el Monorail, que connecta el centre amb l'aeroport de Haneda) fins a edificis emblemàtics que encara avui són molt presents i són part de la candidatura 2020, com el famós estadi Olímpic de Yoyogi.  Tot plegat va fer que hi hagués un abans i un després d'aquells jocs, i amb aquesta mentalitat s'ha fet la candidatura del 2020. Aquí tothom confia que aquests jocs seran un altre punt d'inflexió en un país on tots sabem que l'economia fa temps que no va bé i s'espera que ajudarà a aixecar un país que després del fatídic terratrèmol-tsunami-crisi nuclear va de cap per terra. De fet aquest tema ha estat el més qüestionat i era considerat com el gran punt feble de la candidatura...personalment crec que és difícil de jutjar la situació, la vida per aquí i sobretot a Tokyo segueix el seu curs normal i sembla que poca gent estigui gaire consternada pel tema Fukushima, el que és evident però és que el tema no està ni molt menys ressolt, ara per si les mosques el govern fa poc es va afanyar a aprovar un paquet de mesures de 47 billions JPY i en tot cas jo crec que els Jocs els hi posarà molta més pressió internacional per fer coses i ben fetes. Finalment però malgrat el tema radiació, Tokyo s'ha endut la candidatura...potser el fet que tinguéssin ambaixadors tan particulars com el gat còsmic Doraemon els ha ajudat (:)) ... o potser que la seva defensa ha estat més emotiva (a sota us deixo un vídeo promocional que entra molt bé), qui sap...en fi sense ànim d'entrar en una comparativa de candidatures, jo el que us puc dir és que aquí la ciutat estava bolcada a aquest esdeveniment des de feia mesos, amb un gran suport institucional, polític i esportiu, i una candidatura que fa patxoca distribuida en dues àrees, una part que es desenvoluparà més al centre de la ciutat aprofitant infraestructura existent i una altra més nova que es desenvoluparà al voltant de la zona de la badia (mireu el vídeo de sota per més info). Evidentment en els propers anys s'han de construir diverses infraestructures esportives, la reina de la corona serà la renovació de l'Estadi Olímpic de Sendagaya amb un projecte de la famosa arquitecta Zaha Hadid que serà espectacular! Per part meva doncs, molt content...crec que la ciutat s'ho mereix, no sé si estaré per Tokyo el 2020 però si no, almenys ara ja tindré una bona excusa per tornar-hi!! Gambare Nippon!

Today we woke up with a very good news in Japan! As you all probably know already, this morning for us, Tokyo was elected as the host city of the 2020 Olympic Games!!! Defeating Madrid and Istanbul, Tokyo will host its second summer Olympic Games after 1964, a games that were key in the economic, urbanistic and technologic development of the city and Japan. For what I read and heard from others, those games had a similar impact to our beloved Barcelona'92 (here quite often when you say you are from Barcelona, people would still answer "aah yes...the Olympics").  Consider that the so-called Shinkansen (bullet train) entered in circulation in 1964 to connect Tokyo and Kyoto-Osaka during the games. Similar things in Tokyo, where many infrastructures were built to support the event, from public transport (famous train line, Monorail, that connects downtown area with Haneda airport) to amazing buildings that became part of today's Tokyo landscape and will be also used as venue of the 2020 games (the famous Olympic stadium of Yoyogi). Altogether it resulted in a before and after of those Olympic Games, and with this mindset Tokyo submitted again its application for the 2020 ones. Here everyone's hope is that this games will represent a turning point to a country where the economy doesn't look good since long time ago and on top the disaster earthquake-tsunami-nuclear crisis didn't help to improve it. Actually this subject was the main point of discussion and probably the weakest point of the candidacy...personally I think is tough to give a judgement, on one hand we live in a complete normal environment, particularly in Tokyo, where very fee seem concerned with the subject. On the other hand it is clear that the situation is not solved or even under control, so concerns are justified, but in case recently the government approved a package of measures of 47¥ billion with the aim to resolve them. Regardless of the real situation what is clear is that this election will only put more international pressure to the government to do things, and do it well. So finally besides this issue Tokyo gained the bid, maybe it was the effect of special ambassadors such as Doraemon :)...or maybe because there defend was more emotional (see below promotional video), who knows... however with no aim to enter in a comparison of applications, what I can tell you is that this city has been completely thrown into this project with great institutional support from politicians, athletes and many others, and had an application that looks great, organizing the city in two areas, one closer to city center where they will use venues from the previous Olympics and a new area around the Bay Area (see below video for further info). Obviously in the next coming years several new venues will be built, among them I'd highlight the new Olympic stadium in Sendagaya, with a project from the famous architect Zaha Hadid which looks awesome (see pictures below).
For me thus, I think the city deserved it and I'm very happy for it, don't know if I will be still around in 2020 but at least now I'll have a good excuse to come back! Ganbate Nippon!
