Complint amb les tradicions - Fulfilling traditions

No hi ha res com les tradicions, i si tinc una tradició al Japó aquesta no és gens menys que l'ascensió estiuenca al Mt. Fuji (Fujisan o Fujiyama en Japonès). Així doncs, el cap de setmana passat, encarant el meu quart estiu en aquest país vaig complir amb la tradició pujant també per quarta vegada el sostre del Japó, la segona vegada començant des del mar, el punt més baix del territori. El repte anomenat "From sea to summit" és en essència un esdeveniment per recaptar diners organitzar per la ONG Oxfam Japan. Si ho recordeu la mateixa prova la vàrem fer l'any passat amb els amics Xavi i Cesc acabats d'arribar de BCN! Aquest any va ser físicament menys dura però mentalment molt més esgotadora. Vàrem començar ben d'hora al matí, havent dormit poques, molt poques hores degut a una habitació que semblava més una sauna que un lloc per dormir...i això va passar factura. A més vaig tenir un gran error tècnic...al matí quan vaig veure el personal em vaig adonar que m'havia oblidat la jaqueta per la muntanya a casa!! Pot semblar una tonteria quan comences a gairebé 30C però a dalt del Fuji a 3776m, de nit i sense res que et protegeixi del vent...fot un fred que déu ni do, vaja que les vaig passar bastant putes...ara sinó fós per això el temps va acompanyar bastant, de dia ennuvolat però sense pluja i de nit cel clar, estrellat i amb lluna plena! El recorregut en si va anar bé però evidentment a mesura que passen les hores el cansament es va acumulant i el més dur va ser l'ascens de l'últim tram, que com l'any passat estava a petar de gent i es va fer etern...més de dues hores per fer poc més de 300m a un ritme que quan portes més de 20 hores caminant ens va matar, va arribar un punt que entre el cansament i el ritme caminavem per inèrcia pràcticament en somnolència. Finalment a la cima, com us explicava, tremolant en estat gairebé hipotèrmic fins que els primers rajos de sol van començar a aparèixer i finalment la màgia del fuji se'ns va tornar a descobrir en la seva millor forma dibuixant un paisatge de núvols i muntanyes sota nostre que va fer desaparèixer tots els mals soferts ! La veritat és que és un espectacle que paga la pena! Un cop recuperats vàrem fer el descens per acabar sans i estalvis una nova expedició fuji de més de 27h, 65km i 5000m desnivell que serà recordada! 

There is nothing like traditions, and if I have one tradition in Japan this is my summer hike to Mt. Fuji (Fujisan or Fujiyama in Japanese). So, last weekend, in my 4th summer in this country I fulfilled with the tradition and climbed for forth consecutive summer the highest point of Japan, the second from the sea level, the lowest point of the country.  The challenge called "from Sea to Summit" is in essence an event to fundraise money organized by the NGO Oxfam Japan. If you remember, I did the same challenge last year with my friends Cesc and Xavi who just arrived from Barcelona! This year's challenge was physically less tougher but mentally much more exhausting. We began very early in the mo rning after having slept few hours, too few due to a hotel room that was closer to a sauna rather a place to sleep...and these later caught up with us. In addition I did a big mistake since in the morning when I saw everyone I realized I had forgotten...my mountain jacket!! You may thing it's a silly thing when you start at almost 30C, but at the summit, at 3776m, at night and with a freezing wind blowing from everywhere ...it's veeery cold! Other than this, the the weather was fantastic, clouds but no rain during the day (great for hiking) and clear sky, starts and full moon at night! The journey was quite pleasant, I guess having the experience from last year made it easier...however with the passing of hours, tiredness started to be present and the worst was at the last part of Fuji, when as last year, it was overcrowded and the last 300m felt as an eternity. More than two hours queuing, in the middle of the night after being more than 20hours walking was tough...up to a point were I can barely recall anything, we were just following the pace of the line, half slept and not much conscious ! Then on the top, to complete the package, without my jacket I had probably one of the coldest feeling of my life, shivering like hell until the first rays of the sun showed up and with it the magic of Fuji turned up again showing an amazing landscape of clouds and mountains below us that was a reward to all our efforts! At the end it was worth! After recovering, last part with the descend to finish safe and sound a new Fuji expedition of more than 27h, 65km and 5000m difference that will be remembered!

El cap de setmana passat, de tres dies al Japó, el vaig passar a Hayama un dels poblet costaners més populars a curta distància de Tokyo, en poc més d'una hora un es pot plantar a la platja i tot i que no és el Mediterrani, doncs home una refrescada al mig de l'estiu Japonès sempre es posa bé. Anar a la platja al Japó és una experiència sociològica i un caramel per a la fotografia...tan semblants i tan diferents al mateix temps, al.lucinaríeu amb el nivell de sofisticació de les paradetes de la gent, amb la seguretat que hi ha present o la paradoxal situació de molta gent que malgrat anar a la platja sols intenten protegir-se del sol! En fi tot una bona experiència :)

This last weekend, long weekend in Japan, I went to Hayama, a small seaside town very popular nearby Tokyo, in a bit more than an hour one can go to a real beach that although are not the Mediterranean waters, it feels great in the hot and humid Japanese summer. Going to the beach in Japan as a sociological experience and a candy for photography... so similar and different at the same time, it is amazing to see the level of equipment that Japanese people bring to the beach, or the security aspects they put on or the paradoxical situation of many people that even though going to the beach, they only try to protect themselves from the sun! Anyway as said...a great experience! 

 

  

Per començar l'estiu...examen de Japonès! - To begin this summer...Japanese test!

Aquest cap de setmana ha reunit tot els ingredients per ser recordat, després d'estar plovent gairebé tota la setmana va arribar el cap de setmana i sembla que el període de pluges finalment ens ha abandonat i dissabte ens vàrem despertar amb un canvi radical de temperatura entrant, com és habitual, de ple en l'estiu japonès!! Un dia de sol, calor i xafogor ideal per fer una barbacoa a la vora del mar i celebrar l'aniversari d'un servidor...sí ja sóc un any més gran :)!
I per rematar-ho, diumenge no se'm va ocórrer res millor que anar a fer un examen de japonès... bé de fet estava programat des de feia temps, ni més ni menys que el famós JLPT (famós almenys entre la comunitat estrangera del Japó), el test oficial d'aptitud en llengua japonesa! Més enllà del test, l'experiència paga la pena...100% Japonès! Em sembla que des del meu temps a la universitat no feia pròpiament un examen i va ser prou divertit. Va tenir lloc en un dels campus de la Universitat de Tokyo, plena a rebentar per un dia d'estrangers...segurament es tracta de la concentració més elevada d'estrangers que un pot trobar al Japó :) interessant també el fet que com a estrangers els occidentals erem una minoria i molts dels participants eren asiàtics, sobretot els que s'examinaven pel nivell més alt. L'esdeveniment com era d'esperar va estar súper ben organitzat, no em vull ni imaginar quantes hores hi van posar per preparar-ho però la veritat és que tot va rutllar a la perfecció. L'exàmen estava dividit en tres parts, i malgrat que es feia tot al mateix dia, en la mateixa classe i els mateixos examinadors, en cada part ens van fer parar mitja hora i el pitjor és que ens vàrem haver d'empassar el protocol preparatiu tres vegades, sí sí tres vegades fent la mateixa història que consistia en 20 minuts de rotllo per informar-nos punt per punt sobre tot el que podíem fer i sobretot el que no podíem fer (com si un partit de futbol es tractés tenien targetes grogues i vermelles), revisar que erem el candidat correcte i fer el compte enrere sincronitzat per començar tots al mateix temps, el mateix procediment clavat les tres vegades!! Evidentment doncs ens vàrem passar més de quatre hores allà per fer un examen de dues hores, i això que em va faltar temps per respondre algunes preguntes! Ara a esperar el resultat ja veurem...otsukaresamadeshita!

This weekend had all ingredients to be remembered, after raining almost all week long, the weekend came and finally it seems the rainy season left us and on Saturday we woke up with a complete change of weather, beginning the summer at its most! A day of sun, heat and humidity, ideal for a bbq nearby the sea and celebrate the my birthday...yes I'm a year older :)!
To close this wonderful weekend what else than being closed in a room doing an exam?... yes, I spent my Sunday doing the famous test JLPT (at least famous among the foreign community)...the official test to evaluate your level of Japanese! Beyond the test, the experience was already worth...100% Japanese! I think that since my time at the university I hadn't done an exam, and it was quite funny. It was held at one of the campus of Tokyo University, overcrowded of foreigners for one day...probably the highest concentration ever seen in town! Among the foreigners, it was interesting to see that actually the westerners were just a minority, most of the participants were asian particularly in the highest levels of the test. The whole event, as usual, was perfectly organized, don't want to even think how much time it had to take for them but the results was almost perfect. The test was divided in three parts, and although all was done at the same day, same room, and with the same examiners, between each part we had 30 minutes break and the worst was that every time we had to go through the same protocol of idenfitication, administration and rules of behaviour. After that, a countdown of the last 10 seconds before starting and then everyone could start...Japanese organization! With all these it easy to understand that a test that practically should not take more than 2 hours it turned out to be more than 4!..and even with this I must reckon I lacked some time to finish some questions!! Anyway now  it's done and just have to wait for the results... otsukaresamadeshita!
