T-site Daikanyama!

Great discovery this weekend! I decided to pay a visit to a brand new commercial area called T-site in Daikanyama's trendy neighborhood, an area hosting different types of stores but where amongst many things there is one shinning on its own...the Tsutaya store! Tsutaya is a Japanese chain of books, music and movies with hundreds or thousands of stores but none like this one, my goodness what a place, the best library I've ever seen! All type of books (also in English!) from magazines to arts and much more, a huge selection of videos and music, most of them rental music (yes rental...and is very popular here!) and you can listen as much as you want for free!! This is definitely a place where you can easily spend an afternoon browsing in all these material and if you get tired there is an amazing café-lounge (also a Starbucks...) where to enjoy some drinks or meals (a bit expensive though...). Outstanding as well the communication system in the center, with lots of ipads everywhere were you can look for the Tsutaya catalogue, check the café's menu or get information on the other activities. Anyway this is again a good example of the great things that this city can offer.
By the way, if interested, the place was designed by the duo Klein Dytham architecture (KDa) who amongst other things also own SuperDeluxe, one of the best nightlife places in Tokyo :)

shopping nadalenc

This week my Japanese teacher said "in Japan there is no Christmas tradition but we love shopping" and this is certainly what it is, for this society Xmas means big shopping (they love giving presents) and that's it, of course there is nothing to do with religion and these days are mainly done for consumption and to expense money, streets overcrowded of people buying in an environment that could be easily Barcelona since it's full of lights and Xmas trees and songs everywhere, actually is really nice, I recommend Omotesando street in Harajuku, a pity I couldn't take any decent picture

Xmas shopping at Harajuku

In case someone wants to try the shopping experience in Tokyo however, be sure you will get a real sociologic experience, first as I said in previous posts, the costumer service is excellent, they really make you feel very comfortable and respected, just getting in everyone welcomes you with a warm "irashaimasse", but be aware to wear adequate shoes in case you wanna buy clothes because usually In the dressing rooms you have to be barefoot, and the best what I discovered last day...in some shops they have a kind of bags to cover your head (I believe to avoid to stain clothes)....a nice example of how Japanese feel hygiene.

Kit Kat...have a break!

Us deixo alguns exemples...

Today I'm going to speak about Kit Kat, why? basically because the Kit Kat case in Japan is veeery particular. As you may already know Kit Kat is a confectionery wafer from Nestle that precisely this year commemorates 75 years and that Japanese love it (especially women)!! And not only this but besides the traditional Kit Kat (in Japanese Kitto Katto) in Japan they have many different flavoured Kit Kat...and a kind of flavours that for western people don't sound very conventional (they have one with soy sauce flavour for instance). I've been told that they could launch 50 varieties per year, meaning almost one new variety per week!! It's true however that some of the flavours are only distributed regionally but look how successful is that then when people travels around they buy them as a souvenir to go back home. And on top of that, for Valentine's day is traditional to give one box of Kit Kat as a present with a personal message in the package...certainly a great marketing campaign! Some examples below...

Green tea (the most popular)

Cheese cake

Soy sauce

Banana and chili
Sweet potato (I think...)

Pear

De compres sota la pluja - Shopping under the rain

Alguns punts interessants:
Yesterday I went to Shibuya because I needed to do some urgent shopping for the apartment and although it was raining like hell there was people everywhere, so if in a regular day it's already particular, under the rain the atmosphere was even better. Some interesting points:

Firstly, I took my little orange umbrella from our folks of Ikea (I'm sure most of you also have it)...mistake! I was completely out of place, the umbrellas must be large and the bigger, the better.

Then at the entrance of the stores there is a machine that they only use when rains, and it's used to cover the umbrellas to avoid dripping, really sophisticated!

Once inside, the best, you do your shopping and at the cashier if usually they are already extremely careful (think that they put each one of the items individualy into the bag, the delicates ones wrapped with this film for fragile stuff and if the bag is "heavy", they put a protector in the handle!), when it rains they cover the shopping bag with another one to avoid gets wet, priceless!!!

And obviously at the end, I learnt that you cannot wear the umbrella in any way, of course! one have to wear it with style, hanging from the arm,...fashion over all!

Shimo kitazawa!!

hey...finally today I can update the blog. This last weekend I decided to go outside of the "Tokyo's yolk" (does this exist in english?...), so I went to explore outside the area of the Yamanote line (the welknown JR line in Tokyo that makes a loop)...I didn't go very far either, Shimo Kitazawa, I was told it is a different neighborhood with vintage shops and "alternative" people (this is for Diego!) and to tell you the truth it was very interesting indeed. What's clear is that as soon as you go outside of downtown Tokyo becomes another city with narrow streets, low houses and much less people around...so clearly a different atmosphere.
