PhotobucketJapan is great!! Look at the last story that happened to me. In Europe is rather traditional to receive a gift from your company for Christmas....the value may vary from company to company but usually there is always something (or at least was like that before the crisis). Here in Japan, I don't know whether there is such extended tradition but my company being european has the detail to offer a little present every year...and what a present, this year we have received a box with an assortment of KitKat flavours! Some time ago I already post about this phenomenon in the country and now I received 15 different flavours from all over Japan! Isn't it great? not sure my japanese colleagues will share the same enthusiasm but as a gaijin (foreigner) I found it very original, just looking at it is really nice. Now it's time to try many of this unkown versions although at the end most likely I will choose the always classic "green tea KitKat"!! If anyone wants to try any pass by home :)

I quin va ser el motiu que em va portar allà? doncs la celebració del Shinnenkai (新年会) o "celebració del nou any", una altra tradició japonesa on a començament d'any et reuneixes amb els companys de feina per celebrar el nou any i tot plegat.

Last week I fulfilled another little dream in Japan and went to eat at the famous restaurant Sant Pau in Tokyo!! Yes! for those that don't know it, this is the restaurant of Carme Ruscalleda, one of the best Catalan cooks who already has another Sant Pau in Catalonia with three Michelin stars. The Japanese branch which happen to got the second star just few weeks ago is located in one of the main business areas of the city. What brought me there then? The celebration of Shinnenkai (新年会) or "new year's gathering" , another festivity of the Japanese culture which occurs at the beginning of the year usually with your work colleagues. Luckily in my team we are not many and that is the reason we can afford going to this type of places and enjoy a culinary experience, and was a good one! even though we took the smallest menu, I must say it was already very complete and balanced, in general I would highlight the good and original mixture between typical Catalan products or preparations with Japanese style and ingredients. On the other hand, maybe because I already knew many if the products, although it was exquisite I wasn't astonished with the result, who were really amazed were my Japanese colleagues though :)! Unfortunately this time we couldn't meet Carme so I will have a new excuse to go back once she come to Japan again :)

Yesterday I went dinner with some Japanese colleagues form the university, we went to a toriniku (chicken) restaurant in Ueno area which seems to be quite well-known. The place was very cool, an izakaya-type restaurant with full of kanji characters in the walls, very lively and with a distinctive chicken smell! The food was basic but tasty, all made of chicken and as a curiosity, for the first time in Japan I ate "roasted chicken"! My Japanese colleagues were amazed with each single dish and especially with the liver (they call it "white liva") and obviously everything was accompanied with the respective drinks...beer here, shochu (sake made of potato) there..., one day I will talk longer of the subject of alcohol in this country, it deserves it. So the dinner was very entertaining, actually any dinner with Japanese is guarantee of fun, and especially the evolution of the conversations all along the dinner ;-)

el famós "white liva"!

i per acabar el sopar...Ramen!! / Ramen to close the dinner!

Desembre acolorit a la Universitat - Colourful december at the University

This week I took the advantage of the good weather we have in Tokyo to take some pics at Tokyo University (Hongo Campus). Here is where I spent most of my time since it is where we have our main office. The campus is very cute and seems like a traditional english University, actually the rectory building looks like they took it from a Harry Potter movie, however once said this, I must say as well that there is nothing to do between the outside and inside where most of the faculties would need a "re-shape". Anyhow, the main characteristic of the campus is its Ginko trees (the symbol of the university are two ginko leaves), that in Autumn they turn in a real show of colours -btw the ginko fruits become very smelly when ripe but they taste very good-.
At the end then, good weather, colourful trees and test classic architectural environment to take some nice pics...

Japan is the country of earthquakes by excelence, a long history, lots of experience and unfortunately some natural disasters have made them of reference in this field, in fact the famous word Tsunami is Japanese. Since I came here, I've learnt how to live in a society modulated to this phenomemon and where everyone seems adapted and used to live with an apparently inexistent danger but permanently present...for instance there is a popular saying that here the buildings doesn't last very long and perhaps that's why it seems that they can do whatever they want in terms of architecture. Is precisely in this point where the country has an added value with a policy of antisieismic construction implemented everywhere, so the country nowadays is or seems to be very well prepared, there is a national agency for permanent information, when you arrive there are welcome brochures with all kinds of information in the subject, there are free training courses, earthquake simulations for the population are common and when I started at work I received a survival kit in case one day something happens...for the time being we have had only small movements that to tell you the truth I've hardly noticed...hopefully will be so in the future.

This is the earthquake survival kit I got at work

I started at work today, my office is located at the University of Tokyo, although I will go from time to time to the commercial offices located southern. I will put some pictures later on so you can how it looks like...the University is priceless! For the rest everything looks fine, one of the first things I've received are the business cards (meishi) because the card exchange is culturally very important and there is even a specific way to do so, really interesting!! As a curiosity of the day, I've put a picture of taxis with their kitsch look, they are very funny, aah and if you wanna take a taxi don't try to open the door, they are automatic, I say this from my own embarrassing experience...
