Menus asequibles a primera vista- Affordable menus at first glance

i després de l'entrada turística-cultural, un apunt de caire més professional. Malàsia com molts dels països en vies de desenvolupament, està en un procés de creixement econòmic amb totes les avantatges i iconvenients que això comporta, ràpida urbanització, canvis en l'estil de vida i també un procés de transició nutricional. Els patrons d'alimentació estan canviant ràpidament i amb ells un augment de problemes de salut pública, molts en forma de desordres metabòlics com la diabetis (estimada 11.5%, una de les més altes de la regió) o la obesitat/sobrepès (sobretot alarmant l'evolució infantil). Les raons de tot això són vàries i complexes ara voltant per KL salta a la vista les importants campanyes de comunicació d'empreses estrangeres fast-food com KFC o McDonalds, i sobretot el que em va realment soprendre i que crec que explica moltes coses, no és altre que el cost dels productes en aquests establiments. Us podeu imaginar que el preu de un BigMac Menú (amb patates i beguda) és ni més ni menys que 9RM (¥250 o 2.3€)?? Increïble però cert, em vaig quedar de pedra quan ho vaig veure!! La campanya que l'anomenen "McValue menú" sembla que també l'utilitzen en altres països asiàtics i què voleu que us digui... així no anem bé, aquí algú ha malentès el concepte prevenció de la malnutrició, on una cosa és fomentar una alimentació afordable per evitar la "desnutrició" i l'altre posar pràctiques com aquesta que només fomenten la "sobrenutrició". Futur negre a la vista...

Malaysia, as many other developing countries, is in a process of economic growth with all the pros and cons that goes along, fast urbanization, lifestyle changes and also a period of nutrition transition. Dietary patterns are evolving quickly and with them new concerns on public health, many in form of metabolic disorders such diabetes (estimated around 11.5%, one of the highest in the Asia) or obesity/overweight (particularly notorious the childhood evolution). The answer to this situation is complex and multifactorial however walking around KL it stands-out the important communication campaigns made by some international fast-food companies like KFC or McDonalds, and particularly what it drew most my attention and to me explains many things, is the price of food items in these places. For instance, can you believe that the price of a BigMac Menú (with french fries and soft drink) is at 9RM (¥250 o 2.3€)?? Hard to believe but true, I was astonished when I saw it!! The campaign called "McValue Menu" seems to be in place as well in other Asian countries, and well to me...this is not the right direction, here there is a misunderstanding with the concept of preventing malnutrition, one thing is to promote affordable nutrition to avoid "desnutrition" and the other put in place practices like this that just promote "overnutrition". Dark future in sight....

Yummy Kuala Lumpur!!

Hola! després d'estar desconnectat uns dies ja torno a estar per aquí. Aquesta setmana he estat a Kuala Lumpur i tot i que hi anava per feina, m'he pogut escapar a estones per captar l'aire d'aquesta ciutat. Cada vegada que vaig al sud-est asiàtic em venen records de l'Àsia que coneixia, calor asfixiant, caos de trànsit, vida al carrer, contrasts socials i activitat, molta activitat!. Kuala Lumpur tot i estar molt més organitzada que d'altres grans cituats de la regió, no n'és una excepció. Un centre ciutat en plena ebullició econòmica amb les famoses torres Petronas com a icona i a 15 minuts caminant, barris al llindar de la pobresa on les perspectives de vida són molt diferents, patró característic de molts dels països en desenvolupament. Malàsia és molt interessant des del punt de vista cultural ja que en la població hi ha presència de diferent ètnies, sigui malai, xinès o indí, totes amb una idiosincràsia molt pròpia exemplificada sobretot en el seu menjar...mmm boníssima la gastronomia local! 

Hi!! after some days away, I'm back to Tokyo. This week I've been in Kuala Lumpur and although I went there for work I could take some time to visit around and get a touch of this city. Every time I go to SE Asia I got memories of the Asia I knew, hot and humid weather, chaotic traffic, street life, social contrasts and activity, lots of activity! Kuala Lumpur, despite is much more organized than other cities of the region, it's not an exception. It has a downtown at the hype of economic expansion with the famous Petronas towers as the icon and just 15 minutes walking, neighborhood fighting with poverty and facing a complete different life, good example of the traditional pattern in many of developing countries. Malaysia is very interesting from the cultural point of view since there are several ethnic groups present in their population, either Malay, Chinese or Indian, all of them with a strong idiosyncrasy, particularly exemplified in the food...mmm so yummy these local dishes!!

Singapur!!! - Singapore!!

Hola!! torno a estar per aquí després d'unes setmanes voltant per Catalunya, Suïssa i de nou pel sud est asiàtic, a Singapur on hi vaig anar per un congrés. Ai Singapur...diguem que no et deixa indiferent, quan arribes t'envaeix una sensació rara, en primer lloc un aeroport impolut, quan surts a fora carrers nets amb un palmeral rotllo Miami, un trànsit pausat i sense estridències, després s'obre la badia carregada de vaixells com si estiguéssis en una peli d'aquelles de pirates amb canons i les grans guerres navals, però en aquest cas es tracta de mercaderia fent cua per descarregar al port marítim, un dels més importants del món. I quan encara estàs pensant en això finalment se t'obre la metròpolis al davant amb tot de gratacels i edificis d'estil arquitectònic a lo mínim particular.  Per sobre de tot, destacar el famós hotel vaixell, el Marina Bay Sands que és simplement espectacular i ofereix unes vistes a la ciutat acollonants! Això és Singapur, la ciutat de les prohibicions, del luxe i el benestar, on tot està tan net, ordenat i en bon estat que no sembla natural, sembla mentida que estigui rodejat per països ecom Indonesia o Malàsia amb una situació econòmica tan diferent.

Hello!! I'm back after some weeks around visiting Catalonia, Switzerland and again to south east asia, in Singapur for a congress. What a city...let's say it doesn't leave you indifferent, when you get there there's a bizarre sensation that surrounds you, firstly an unpolluted airport, outside clean roads with palms Miami's style, quiet traffic without noise and then the bay opens with a sea full of boats as if you were in one of those movies of pirates in naval warfares, but it happens to be commodity boats queuing to unload at the seaport, one of the biggest in the world. And then, when you're still thinking about it finally the metropolis opens itself in front with its huge skycrapers and buildings of particular architectural style at least. Above all, it stands-out the famous boat hotel, the Marina Bay Sands which is simply unbelievable and offers awesome views of the city! This is Singapore, the city of bans, luxury and well-being where everything is so clean, tidy and in a good condition that doesn't seem natural and it makes hard to believe it is surrounded by countries like Indonesia or Malasia with a complete different economic situation.

Voltant per Àsia: Beijing

Aquesta setmana passada aprofitant un viatge per feina, vaig tenir la oportunitat de visitar Beijjing, primera visita a la Xina que no em va decebre per res…arribada al nou aeroport internacional amb una terminal acollonant, tot ben ordenat i controlat per la polícia i jo que em dic « doncs tampoc és gaire diferent del Japó « …error ! només sortir m’adono que ambdós païssos s’assemblen poc, el trànsit és infernal, retencions per tot arreu i la gent condueix com vol pitant i cridant sense parar, un panorama ben contraposat a la vida japonesa ! Beijing és una ciutat immensa amb molta història al darrera, malgrat s’hagin carregat bona part del patrimoni històric i on tot i que són evident els aires comunistes per tot arreu emergeix una nova Beijing capitalista, amb una activitat i construcció que sembla no aturar-se, de fet sembla que la ciutat creix a una velocitat superior a la societat on hi ha una gran part de la població vivint en condicions evidents bastant deplorables, diria que és el país on he vist un diferèncial més gran entre pobresa i riquesa, m’ha sorprès la riquesa aparent d’una bona part de la societat amb un nivell de vida molt elevat. Els xinesos tampoc tenen res a veure amb els japonesos, molt directes i fins i tot verbalment agressius es veuen més vius que els nipons. Aquests dies doncs he aprofitat per veure els punts més destacats de la cituat, voltar en bici per alguns Hutongs o barris antics i gaudir en definitiva d’una ciutat que m’ha fet retornar al caos asiàtic que tenia conegut.


This last week I got the opportunity to visit Beijing, first visit to China that didn’t disappointed me at all…I arrived to the new international airport with its awesome terminal, all well organized and controlled by the police and I said by myself…”this looks quite similar to Japan”…error! Just outside I realized it has little to do with Japan, the traffic is horrible, traffic jams everywhere and everyone driving in their way, horning and shouting all the time, a complete different situation than the Japanese life! Beijing is a huge city with a long history behind, even though much of its historical patrimony has been destroyed, and a place even if the signs of communisms are still present, a new capitalist Beijing emerges with endless activity and construction everywhere. Actually it seems the that the city is growing at faster speed than the society itself since there is a big part of the population living in very poor conditions, to me it is the first time I see such a huge gap between higher and lower classes, I was surprised to see such high quality of life in a relevant part of the society. Chinese have little to do with Japanese, very direct in their communication, sometimes they can even be aggressive, they definitely look more vivacious that their neighbors. These days thus, I’ve taken the opportunity to visit the most popular spots, ride by bike in some Hutongs or old neighborhoods and in short, to enjoy of a city that make me remember of the mess I was used to in Asia.
