Lost in the Japanese Alps there is one of the most incredible places in Japan, the Jigokudani Yaen-koen, or better known as the park of the wild snow monkeys (yuki saru). The first time I heard about it was some years ago when browsing into a nature photography book I saw an amazing double page photo of some monkeys taking a hot bath in a mountain surrounded by snow. Since then I kept this image in my memory and when I moved to Japan I knew I could not miss this visit. At the end it took longer than expected but I finally last weekend I went to this remote place in Nagano-ken. What a great experience!! It wasn't the best weather though, grey, cold and snowing...a combination that was not very appealing to go out but we started hiking up following a path inside a deep forest with huge trees and above all complete silence that brought us even more uncertainty of what we would find later on, and what it appeared suddenly in front of us was a lovely little village with few houses in the middle of the mountain, and when we were still wondering how this could be there we realized the place was full of monkeys popping-up from everywhere...we had arrived at the land of the monkeys! The central point of park is around the rotenburo (outdoors thermal hot bath), were the monkeys tend to spend most of their time during winter, and there we went straight ...such a unique place, imagine a group of 150 monkeys living together, running up and down, fighting, gesticulating, flirting, looking for food, washing themselves, and of course getting soaked in hot bath...and all in an environment of complete ignorance, like if no humans were around. So finally even though the freezing cold and bad weather we stayed there for more than two hours and on the way back I couldn't think other than at the end there is no such a big difference between monkeys and humans!

Cap de setmana als Alps!! - Weekend in the Alps!!

Feeling the summer already here, there is nothing better that an outing to the mountains to forget about the hot and humid Tokyo weather and enjoy the fresh air and nature of these country. And in Japan this is not a problem, with about 70% of mountainous territory, this country is great for hiking! This time, with some friends, we decided to head to the Northern-Alps, at the region called Kamikochi, in Nagano prefecture, not far from Matsumoto city. Kamikochi is a natural park along a river and surrounded by a wonderful environment at the heart of the Alps. From there there are plenty of hiking routes, we took an easy but interesting one, climbing Yake-dake, one of the few active volcanos of the Alps. We split the ascend in two parts, first on Saturday, quite easy and mostly into forests but we didn't have that good weather and was raining almost all the time, so we were really looking forward to get to the hut, which ended up being a cozy and comfortable place to overnight. On Sunday, luckily we woke up with a wonderful day ready to head up to the summit, which although not that high (2500m), it became a much more rocky and demanding....particularly when you loose the path and end up taking an alternative path almost climbing :) Finally we made it without major issue and it was really worthwhile since the views from the top were gorgeous, it reminded me my times in Switzerland, with the difference that when I turned my head, there was a steaming crater !

And after recovering strength with a yummy meal of soba and relaxing in an Onsen, we headed back to Matsumoto to take the train back to Tokyo, before however there was a mandatory stopover to see the Matsumoto castle (Matsumoto-jo), one of the National Treasures of Japan and considered one of the most beautiful traditional castles remaining...and so it is!

Al Kita-Dake amb sorpresa - To Kita-Dake with surprise

Back again to the blog after some weeks of abscence....gomenasai! Several things came lately and I didn´t have time to dedicate to the blog. Anyhow, I´m back to Japan, after another hot summer now the weather is much better, temperature dropped and September is  perfect to enjoy outdoors activities (providing it doesn´t rain....and this is not uncommon though).
So, some days ago I went again hiking to the mountains, this time at the South Alps of Japan (Minami Alps), to climb Kita-Dake, the second highest point of the country with around 3200m.

Great experience, the Alps are amazing, as usual dense and greenery mountains everywhere. We took the ascent at easy pace. walking for 5-6 hours in a nice trail with progressive changes of the vegetation and environment around, all in an excellent sunny day for hiking.
At mid-afternoon we made it to the hut located at 3000m, last stop before facing the last part of the ascent the next day at dawn, where theoretically one of the best landscapes of Japan was expecting us.

Our stay at the hut will be unforgettable, we had dinner at 17h (in my life I'd have ever said I could eat that early!!) and breakfast (traditional Japanese) at 04h when was still dark. In between some (rather few) hours of sleep, sleeping at the floor in a room packed of people, with a quite "dense" atmosphere, some snoring and other kind of physiological noises...lovely.

Els companys d'habitació / Our room-mates!

The surprise came when we woke up and found it was raining! and gosh, I tell you it was! Yet with this situation we couldn't do anything else but keep going so we continued our hike to the summit where obviously we couldn't see anything (nor even the shape of Fuji!) and there was such a strong rain and wind that we almost flu away.

Que quedi constància que hi vàrem arribar ! / At least, a reference that we were there

Aquesta és la vista que ens vàrem trobar / This is the view we got from the top

And this is what we were expecting to see...
From there we started our descent to the other site of the mountain and with it another adventure. The path was really nice and funny, jumping stones, crossing improvised bridges, rafting down...very nice but of course with the rain we had to watched out very carefully! Luckily after 4-5 hours we finally made down safe and happy.  Then as it starts to be traditional, before going back to Tokyo we stop by in an Onsen to relax a bit, and it felt really good!
