Gelats de tardor! - Autumn ice-creams!

A sota us deixo uns exemples curiosos:

Chilly winter is just around the corner and one thing that usually vanish from our life are ice-creams...well at least in Europe because here they eat them all year long. It may sound bizarre, cold with cold doesn`t seem to mix very well but in Japan the consumption of ice-cream is very popular and there is no big seasonal differences, even more, when fall approaches manufacturers launch special marketing campaigns or new products with seasonal ingredients. Actually the subject of ingredients is quite interesting, there are very particular examples...and flavors too! Another aspect are the shape and textures, I found the japanese ice-cream industry quite creative in this area always launching new shapes and appearances new to me. Here some examples:

To start with a classic, Coolish...standard flavors (strawberry, banana...) with a very particular shape, as you can see below the concept is quite different from what we are used to since you need to squeeze-up the package to be able to eat it, as it was a toothpaste tube!

 photo file_zps498050b0.jpg

Then more traditionals flavours...for Japanese of course! Typical are the varieties with red beans (azuki), in the first picture mixed with macha (green tea) like a traditional summer dessert. Below that, there is a full version with azuki and another with traditional flavor of sweet potato cake!

Another delicacy...the ice-creams with "mochi" taste and texture! Mochi is the typical sweet made of glutinous rice. The first example is an ice-cream of mochi and kinako (soybean flour) ...very yummy! The other one called "mochi-cream" it even has the regular shape of a mochi ball!!

 photo file_zps7a7d9272.jpg photo file_zps22d1c645.jpg

In Japan there are also big treats...look at two of the new launches I saw the other day. The first one is almost 300kcal/portion and the other below, top of the top, almost 400kcal!! A good example for those that believe in Japan everything is healthy and balanced!

 photo file_zpse5d776d2.jpg
 photo file_zpsa9a93471.jpg

My season's favorite, the sweet potato ice-cream....it even has the shape and its skin! photo file_zps93e8fbf3.jpg

Lastly, another exemple of an ice-cream...fake! Albeit its look, this is a biscuit !! Japanese style!

Treball de communitat al barri / Community work in the neighborhood

Those little things that keep surprising me in this country. This morning I went out direction to the subway heading to work, and when I was at halfway of my street, suddenly a group of office workers step out holding a garbage bag on one hand and tongs in the other to collect litter from the street!!  The image was unique, men and women with office dress code wearing spotless suits and shirts cleaning the streets. All wearing their employee ID and an armband with the company's name, altruistically collaborating to the maintenance of our neighborhood. Great example of community work in Japan!

Falsa alarma!! - False alarm!!

A partir d'aquí trucades amunt i avall preguntant a gent i coneguts, ningú havia notat res.

The curiosity of this week. On Wednesday I was at the office working as usual when suddenly all cell-phones started to ring like hell with everybody in the room jumping scared in their chairs. At first I didn't know what was going on but then someone mentioned "jishin" (earthquake) and I understood it was the quake alert we all have in our cell-phones...yes in Japan there is an alert system that communicates through devices such mobiles or TV when a quake has been detected to make everyone aware and ready for what is coming! Actually it was the first time for me since I had it configured in a way that only sounds when a big quake happens, so when we realized what was about we started to wonder what to do, and even more when we saw that what was announced had a magnitude 7 (highest in the Japanese scale!)...one of my colleagues was already under the table, another one going up and down in the office completely stressed because she is originally from Osaka, nearby where the quake was announced. Calm and tense moment waiting for the movement...one minute, two but nothing happened. Then we started to call and write people everywhere buy no one knew anything either. After half an hour there was an official release from the government saying that all had been a false alert, mistaken from a quake magnitude 2! What a mess! They received complaints and criticism from everyone...personally I rather prefer a false alarm to no information at all. Nothing is perfect...even in Japan :)!

Curiosity of the day...I already posted about religion in Japan, here in general people don't seem to be that much into it but when you ask them, most would declare themselves so, more for tradition than beliefs but usually they will say they are either buddhists, shintoists or the most common, following both religions. However, if you spend some time in Tokyo, one can think that beyond their traditional religions many japanese are christian as well since it is quite common to see people wearing christian symbols, particularly the cross, in a t-shirt, neckless or earrings...nothing further from the truth they just wear it because they like it, purely aesthetic! Similarly, the popularity of catholic style weddings is amazing. Yesterday though, I was faced to another example to freak out, when I got to the office I just realized the colleague in front of me had put a religious picture of virgin Maria in her desk!! At first, I fool myself thinking that she could be a christian person so when she came I asked her and...of course she told that even didn't know who was in that picture and simply like the drawing!  Although I'm not catholic, when I see these kind of examples I got quite surprised, these thin line between the sacred and the banality strikes me, and probably for many would even be quite disrespectful. Nonetheless, when you think twice about it, perhaps is not that different from the West using buddhist or hindu symbols without much understanding of what their represent, so I guess at the end everything is relative...

De tan tranquil fa por - So quiet is scary

The feature of the day...tonight I was with a friend at the underground going back home, we were chatting as usual when suddenly we realized we were stopped at a station and noticed that no one but absolutely no one was talking in the car, what's more there wasn't a single noise! This is not the first time that happens something similar, actually it's quite common, as I mentioned in other posts, the underground is a place where people always takes the opportunity to take a break in their stressful lifestyle and try to relax and rest for a while...yet I'm still amazed of the situation every time it happens, nothing compared to the noisy and loudly transportation of the west :)

Res més relatiu que la bellesa - Nothing more debatable but beauty

Gran història la d'avui, 100% made in Japan. Què us sembla??

Great story today, 100% Japanese!. Since I came to Japan one of things (among many others) that caught my attention with girls, was that many of them have crooked teeth resulting in an imperfect smile, particularly the canines pushing forward in a vampiresque look. On the other hand however I don't see that many girls with dental correction so altogether was quite mysterious until few days ago when I finally found the answer....in Japan teeth imperfections are considered cute!!Apparently some men find the imperfect smile as attractive, childlike...they even have a word to describe this which is Yaeba (literally double tooth). This subject is so popular that there are even dental clinics offering the possibility to get Yaeba implants for those with "straight" teeth, called "Tsukeyaeba" (added Yaeba). The most stunning thing I read is that the owner of one of these clinics in Ginza decided, as a marketing campaign, to sponsor a J-Pop band called TYB48 (playing with the word TsukeYaeba and the famous J-Pop band AKB48) which is composed by three girls all with yaeba smile! so, how do you like this? Amazing isn't it?...we, in western countries, paying to align teeth and here they are paying to disalign them! But well, it's true that at the end who defines the rules of beauty?  everyone to his one taste :)

Tomomi Itani a famous singer of AKB48 and one of the most well-known Yaeba characters

PhotobucketJapan is great!! Look at the last story that happened to me. In Europe is rather traditional to receive a gift from your company for Christmas....the value may vary from company to company but usually there is always something (or at least was like that before the crisis). Here in Japan, I don't know whether there is such extended tradition but my company being european has the detail to offer a little present every year...and what a present, this year we have received a box with an assortment of KitKat flavours! Some time ago I already post about this phenomenon in the country and now I received 15 different flavours from all over Japan! Isn't it great? not sure my japanese colleagues will share the same enthusiasm but as a gaijin (foreigner) I found it very original, just looking at it is really nice. Now it's time to try many of this unkown versions although at the end most likely I will choose the always classic "green tea KitKat"!! If anyone wants to try any pass by home :)

This is the list of flavours:
Soybean flavour, Brown sugar syrup flavour, Strawberry cheese cake flavour, Wasabi flavour, Pear flavour, Red beans sandwich flavour, Shinshu apple flavour, Hot Japanese chili flavour, Blueberry cheese cake flavour,  Citrus golden blend flavour, Hojicha-Roasted tea flavour, Matcha-Green tea flavour, Cinnamon cookie flavour, Strawberry flavour and Purple sweet potato flavour

I quina pinta més cofoia i gandula que feien aquests dos!! :)

Got out from the subway and bump into this image in front of me...brilliant, a Japanese retiree going for a walk with his dogs...by electric bike and the dogs mounted in baskets in the front and the back of the bike!! The subject of dogs deserve as well some posts, here is frequent to see people going for a walk with dogs mounted in strollers, but in a bike, never ever! Watch the historical evolution they've had, from being means of transport to being transported by human beings! And look what a pleased and lazy look they both had!! :)

Yes...even though our winter is not as tough as in Europe here it's also cold!...I already talked about this issue before, all comes due to the bad buildings isolation and a lack of proper heating systems, turning in a cold feeling that we keep all day long!! In another society to solve it probably would act on the causes of the problem, in Japan...don't and this has turned up in many creative ideas to make a more bearable winter. Here some of my favourites:

1. Blankets!! classic option all over the world, usually bars and restaurants offer them, the particularity here is that they are used...indoors!! Try to see the picture of going out for lunch and eating with a blanket on top! Of course it helps.

Photobucket

Gran descobriment!!

2-Heat pads!! My favourite!!! These are the well-known Hokkairo! a very important business at winter time. As their name says these are pads that heat...and for god's sake they do! When you open a packaging there is an exotermic reaction in contact with oxygen and start to producing heat that last all day long! In the market you can find lots of types and colours, big or little size, especial for hands or feet  and generally very cheap. So a huge offer but actually the demand is not short, based on my experience I would say that almost everyone uses them, and not one but...two, three or even four!!

Pako with his back heat pad...he had another one in front!

3.Termic underwear: maybe doesn't sound very sophisticated but it's very popular in Japan, and mostly thanks to UniQlo (Japanese Zara), who develop a special line of clothes called HeatTech made with special fibers and very light. Amazing the market penetration ...and well for me the shocking thing were the underpants for men...I tell you, lots of men, young and elderly, students or salarymen, use them in their daily life, just as another element of their usual clothing. Certainly the look when wearing them is at least curious...at the end however I reckon it works very well :)

Nous veins al barri! - New neighbors!

- Tuna's most expensive ever!

One of the big hits this beginning of the year has been the famous record of tuna's auction, yes...a astonishing price of 565.000euros (56.5M JPY) for a piece of 269kg!!! the beast which was caught in the northeastern region of Aomori, was sold in the first auction of the year at the fish market of Tokyo, and well although undoubtedly the quality had to be exquisite, the value was clearly overpriced to be the first auction of the year (all about luck and prosperity ...). The buyer, a famous chain of Sushi restaurants, said that they did it to give a boost to the economy in Japan (that's solidarity!!) and that in any case they wanted to increase their average price of tuna's sushi (between 130-420 JPY/piece) as the real value could have gone up to 8000 JPY/piece!!  Deliberately or not, at the end they got a tremendous marketing campaign!!

Beaujolais Nouveau mania!!

the curiosity of the day...today, Nov 17 is the opening day of Beaujolais Nouveau!! yeah since early morning everyone is excited with the subject..."have you already bought Beaujolais??¨and I that before Japan didn't have a clue about it, am still amazed...so the story is about a young wine from Beaujolais (!!) region in France that since many years ago decided to build a kind of festivity around the opening of the first bottles of wine of the year fixing an exact date for it, which usually is mid-november...and well as it couldn't be different, Japanese that are very much into these things accepted very well this "tradition" and with pride because actually due to the time difference, japanese are the first ones to drink Beaujolais (when they open the first bottle here in France are still sleeping...) so...supermarkets full with it, special aircrafts landing to Narita ...I've read that Japan takes almost half of the worldwide exportations of this wine!...and well to me, to pay at least 2000 yen (more than 20 euros!) for a light and tasteless wine...kind of things you only see in Japan ;)

Lavabos d'última generació? - High-tech toilets?

Little by little I´m knowing more about this country and with time I realize it has a double side in many aspects, as a matter of fact the technology, here some examples...if sometime ago I posted about the famous high-tech toilets...it's not difficult to find opposite examples, here a couple of videos, the first one is globally the best toilet I've seen so far and the second...well you have to be there ;-)

Cuinetes, botiga catalana a Tokyo

In my way back with my donuts I bumped into a nice story that deserves few lines. Japanese are indeed a particular society but if there is one thing I always feel with amazement is their will for altruistic help that everyone has well instilled. Some months ago I had the idea to build something at home using bamboo canes, so I began to search them in some flower shops but without success, anyone had entire bamboo canes...one day however, I found a small flower shop that had some which looked to be in the garbage so I went to the owner, a lovely little elderly woman, and with my survival japanese I tried to explain her what I wanted...the woman, who obviously took sometime to understand me, listened patiently and finally accepted, but not only this, she cleaned and wrapped them and didn't want I pay for them. On top of that, since with the canes and the bike she realized my way back home was quite dangerous, she offered herself to give me a lift with her tiny car Dr. Slump style, to home! Amazing isn't it? well, today without noticing it I headed to her place again and she was there, as every single day i guess, and the best thing is that she recognized me!! you may think is quite silly but these are the things that make me appreciate my life here :-)

Ja ha passat mig any! - Already half a year!

Today it's 6 months I came to Japan!! It's hard to believe...already half a year and yet it seems it was yesterday I got here, but not...actually many things happened in these first months, new job, new friends, new culture, new habits (riding by bike everywhere as if I was back to my youth age)...anyhow, all news to begin a new period where now I'm fully settled and with lots of optimism for the future! To celebrate it nothing else better than the football Asian cup final between Japan and Australia (even though they are from Oceania), so I went with some friends in a bar to watch the match...it was very interesting to see the atmosphere and pasion of the supporters (see video below) and luckly at the end Japan won the match, winning the title for fourth time. Btw, in a country where still nowadays there is one of the lowest rates of immigration, a Japanese-corean scored the goal of the victory :-).

Avocado Airbag!

The news of the day....yesterday I bought an avocado at the grocery store....nothing special, but when I got home, I found one of those Japanese things that leave you amazed...the guys had wrapped it into a bag inflated to do like an airbag effect! awesome costumer service!!

Kit Kat...have a break!

Us deixo alguns exemples...

Today I'm going to speak about Kit Kat, why? basically because the Kit Kat case in Japan is veeery particular. As you may already know Kit Kat is a confectionery wafer from Nestle that precisely this year commemorates 75 years and that Japanese love it (especially women)!! And not only this but besides the traditional Kit Kat (in Japanese Kitto Katto) in Japan they have many different flavoured Kit Kat...and a kind of flavours that for western people don't sound very conventional (they have one with soy sauce flavour for instance). I've been told that they could launch 50 varieties per year, meaning almost one new variety per week!! It's true however that some of the flavours are only distributed regionally but look how successful is that then when people travels around they buy them as a souvenir to go back home. And on top of that, for Valentine's day is traditional to give one box of Kit Kat as a present with a personal message in the package...certainly a great marketing campaign! Some examples below...

Green tea (the most popular)

Cheese cake

Soy sauce

Banana and chili
Sweet potato (I think...)

Pear

Kit Kat with message box
