Lost in the Japanese Alps there is one of the most incredible places in Japan, the Jigokudani Yaen-koen, or better known as the park of the wild snow monkeys (yuki saru). The first time I heard about it was some years ago when browsing into a nature photography book I saw an amazing double page photo of some monkeys taking a hot bath in a mountain surrounded by snow. Since then I kept this image in my memory and when I moved to Japan I knew I could not miss this visit. At the end it took longer than expected but I finally last weekend I went to this remote place in Nagano-ken. What a great experience!! It wasn't the best weather though, grey, cold and snowing...a combination that was not very appealing to go out but we started hiking up following a path inside a deep forest with huge trees and above all complete silence that brought us even more uncertainty of what we would find later on, and what it appeared suddenly in front of us was a lovely little village with few houses in the middle of the mountain, and when we were still wondering how this could be there we realized the place was full of monkeys popping-up from everywhere...we had arrived at the land of the monkeys! The central point of park is around the rotenburo (outdoors thermal hot bath), were the monkeys tend to spend most of their time during winter, and there we went straight ...such a unique place, imagine a group of 150 monkeys living together, running up and down, fighting, gesticulating, flirting, looking for food, washing themselves, and of course getting soaked in hot bath...and all in an environment of complete ignorance, like if no humans were around. So finally even though the freezing cold and bad weather we stayed there for more than two hours and on the way back I couldn't think other than at the end there is no such a big difference between monkeys and humans!

There is nothing like traditions, and if I have one tradition in Japan this is my summer hike to Mt. Fuji (Fujisan or Fujiyama in Japanese). So, last weekend, in my 4th summer in this country I fulfilled with the tradition and climbed for forth consecutive summer the highest point of Japan, the second from the sea level, the lowest point of the country.  The challenge called "from Sea to Summit" is in essence an event to fundraise money organized by the NGO Oxfam Japan. If you remember, I did the same challenge last year with my friends Cesc and Xavi who just arrived from Barcelona! This year's challenge was physically less tougher but mentally much more exhausting. We began very early in the mo rning after having slept few hours, too few due to a hotel room that was closer to a sauna rather a place to sleep...and these later caught up with us. In addition I did a big mistake since in the morning when I saw everyone I realized I had forgotten...my mountain jacket!! You may thing it's a silly thing when you start at almost 30C, but at the summit, at 3776m, at night and with a freezing wind blowing from everywhere ...it's veeery cold! Other than this, the the weather was fantastic, clouds but no rain during the day (great for hiking) and clear sky, starts and full moon at night! The journey was quite pleasant, I guess having the experience from last year made it easier...however with the passing of hours, tiredness started to be present and the worst was at the last part of Fuji, when as last year, it was overcrowded and the last 300m felt as an eternity. More than two hours queuing, in the middle of the night after being more than 20hours walking was tough...up to a point were I can barely recall anything, we were just following the pace of the line, half slept and not much conscious ! Then on the top, to complete the package, without my jacket I had probably one of the coldest feeling of my life, shivering like hell until the first rays of the sun showed up and with it the magic of Fuji turned up again showing an amazing landscape of clouds and mountains below us that was a reward to all our efforts! At the end it was worth! After recovering, last part with the descend to finish safe and sound a new Fuji expedition of more than 27h, 65km and 5000m difference that will be remembered!

Cap de setmana als Alps!! - Weekend in the Alps!!

Feeling the summer already here, there is nothing better that an outing to the mountains to forget about the hot and humid Tokyo weather and enjoy the fresh air and nature of these country. And in Japan this is not a problem, with about 70% of mountainous territory, this country is great for hiking! This time, with some friends, we decided to head to the Northern-Alps, at the region called Kamikochi, in Nagano prefecture, not far from Matsumoto city. Kamikochi is a natural park along a river and surrounded by a wonderful environment at the heart of the Alps. From there there are plenty of hiking routes, we took an easy but interesting one, climbing Yake-dake, one of the few active volcanos of the Alps. We split the ascend in two parts, first on Saturday, quite easy and mostly into forests but we didn't have that good weather and was raining almost all the time, so we were really looking forward to get to the hut, which ended up being a cozy and comfortable place to overnight. On Sunday, luckily we woke up with a wonderful day ready to head up to the summit, which although not that high (2500m), it became a much more rocky and demanding....particularly when you loose the path and end up taking an alternative path almost climbing :) Finally we made it without major issue and it was really worthwhile since the views from the top were gorgeous, it reminded me my times in Switzerland, with the difference that when I turned my head, there was a steaming crater !

And after recovering strength with a yummy meal of soba and relaxing in an Onsen, we headed back to Matsumoto to take the train back to Tokyo, before however there was a mandatory stopover to see the Matsumoto castle (Matsumoto-jo), one of the National Treasures of Japan and considered one of the most beautiful traditional castles remaining...and so it is!
