Hello! I'm back ! Again in Tokyo :) and I'd say it seems I had forgotten how the summer is...the hot and humid weather is already here and well I rather prefer other seasons to live in a city like this, luckily our japanese are well prepared to face the coming two months. If sometime ago I wrote about the "anti-cold" measures for winter time, today I want to talk about the summer innovations against heat "cool Japan"!!

1. The first group are all kind of devices made to make wind: from the traditional ones to the most sophisticated, high-tech or not so developed...the point here is to make wind and that it circulates!!

this is a fan that goes directly attached to the matress and makes wind circulating in the bed!

ventiladors per a tots gustos / fans for everyone

El meu favorit...sense comentaris!!! My favorite...no comments!!! :)

2. The second big group are all accessories and inventions to refresh oneself and cool down the body temperature. With a broad and varied market, here we find very japanese stuff, from wet tissues for your neck or head, to more unique clothes like "cool leggins" or frozen pillows!

coixins amb gel congelat a l'interior / pillows with frozen gel inside

Interesting, these stuff contains a kind of gel that theoretically absorbs your body temperature cooling down

Cool leggins!! gotta try maybe...

3. And finally the third biggest group by far is one of the most important subjects of this society...how to keep beer cool!! What else? any kind of stuff meant to keep beer in a good temperature outside of the fridge of course. I tell you, you would be amazed of the market size...and for those aiming for something more, the summer hit, frozen beer or better say cold beer with frozen foam, not bad!

In Japan even the commercials have a touch of uniqueness and amongst them theres particularly one campaign that are the funniest, these are the commercials of one of the phone companies, Softbank, who since some years ago started to advertise its family plan through the image of a surrealistic family, the mother is a japanese woman, the daughter a Japanese pop-star singer, the son an African-american man and finally the best, the father is an adorable dog who became a complete celebrity and people even put a name on him, ¨kai-kun¨! The campaign has been so successful that now it's been years on-going  and the dog became the image of the company up to the point it is used in all their communication and they even developed some merchandising with it. Lately the family grew up with a new member who is a famous Japanese model.

Below some of the funniest commercials. The first one is one of the latest where the promotion was to get a new bike for all new costumers, really good, I still laugh everytime I see it !

Lavabos d'última generació? - High-tech toilets?

Little by little I´m knowing more about this country and with time I realize it has a double side in many aspects, as a matter of fact the technology, here some examples...if sometime ago I posted about the famous high-tech toilets...it's not difficult to find opposite examples, here a couple of videos, the first one is globally the best toilet I've seen so far and the second...well you have to be there ;-)

today's post is about social networking....did you know that in Japan the all-powerful Facebook has one of the lowest penetration index?...especially considering that is one of the most advanced societies in technology and almost everyone has a cellphone with internet access. I've been looking and it is said that in 2011 the users are around 3M, which means less than 3% of the population...compared to other countries such USA (48%), UK (45%) or Singapore (50%) it makes a huge difference doesn't it? Then the question is, Japanese doesn't like SNS? not at all, they love them but as it couldn't any other way, it seems there is life beyond FB and here they have their own platforms of social networking, among them the most famous is "Mixi" (Mixi Inc.) with more than 25M users and big popularity. It is said that FB doesn't have much success because is too direct in its communication for the Japanese, and certainly although being a social network, Mixi is the anthitesis of FB, really "made for Japanese", do get an account you need first an invitation and a Japanese cell phone, meaning that practically they limit their users to people living in Japan! All contents are in Japanese, people usually uses nicknames, profile's visitors are registered, and there are many security limits...so interesting isn't it? another example of the differences in this society, for the time being I still don't have an account, basically for the Japanese, but maybe I should start to reconsider it ;-)

Arriba el 3D - 3D is coming!

the other day I pass by Akihabara, the famous electric city and known to be the reference in electronics and as it couldn't be any other way I found a promotional campaign of the new Nintendo DS in 3 dimensions, that has been just launched here...everyone passing by stopped for a while and actually was really interesting, amazing the result...unbelievable how fast all this move on

If in Spain there is the well-known Roca, in Japan thhey have Toto, THE toilet company with presence in all Japanese households :-) (ok perhaps my experience is not conclusive yet but so far it has been like that). Up to here nothing special but I can tell you they are much more advanced than us in this field. When gathering on one hand and extreme sense for hygiene with one of the most advanced countries in technologies, you get as a result a high-tech toilets with a remote control of the temperature, music, water level or the regulation of the "post-service hygienic system", in fact it's a two-in-one, WC plus bidet at the same time, so at the end this makes that going to the toilet is a real pleasure :-)!
But wait because this is not the end, actually Toto's people just announced the launch of a new toilets generation with a health-check system (urine analysis, blood pressure, body temperature...)!! They say they have noticed a market ninche with hypocondriac users...awesome, and all this considering the context in Japan that not so long time ago (actually you can still find them) the traditional WC was the turkish style, so look how they have evolved, a good learning of the Japanese business mindset.

Tokyo Game Show 2010

Hey! it's been a while since my last post...I'm back to write about the famous Tokyo Game Show I went a couple of weeks ago. This is a mega festival with all the news in the videogames world, there are all the big companies like Sony, Konami, Sega or Microsoft and as usual it's crowded of people and full of Otakus (japanese term to describe people with obsessive hobbies). People did loong waiting times (more than hour in some cases) to play just 5 minutes in the latest launches, lots of them were taking pictures to the hostess, big presentations of the latest technologies and games and even life competitions of games supported by many followers. From all what I saw I'd highlight Sony moving towards the 3D games and Microsoft with a similar system than Wii but looks even better.
And besides that the other attraction was the Cosplays, of all kind and variety...(see next post)
