Res més relatiu que la bellesa - Nothing more debatable but beauty

Gran història la d'avui, 100% made in Japan. Resulta que des de que vaig arribar en aquest país hi havia un aspecte que des del principi em va cridar l'atenció en les noies...n'hi ha moltes que tenen les dents mal posades! Vaja que no les tenen aliniades, sobretot a nivell dels canins (ullals) que els acostumen a témer bastant sortits però per altra banda tampoc sembla que s'utilitzi gaire l'ortodòncia correctiva...mmm tot un bon misteri que finalment recentment ha trobat resposta...fa poc que he après que al Japó la imperfecció dental és un signe de bellesa (!!), tal qual als nois japonesos troben atractives les noies amb dents descol.locades, fins i tot hi ha un adjectiu per definir-ho, s'anomena Yaeba (literalment doble dent). El tema és tan popular que fins i tot han aparegut cliniques dentals que ofereixen "implants" de canins, conegut com tsukeyaeba! el no va más és que la propietària d'una clínica dental a Ginza sembla ser que com a campanya de marketing va esponsoritzar un grup de J-Pop (Pop Japonès) conegut com TYB48 (contracció entre TsukeYaeba i el famós grup AKB 48) que està format per tres noies que van a la moda yaeba! Què us sembla?? Interassantíssim no?...nosaltres pagant per tenir les dents rectes i aquí per descol.locar-les, però ben mirat qui defineix els canons de bellesa, per a gustos els colors :) !

Great story today, 100% Japanese!. Since I came to Japan one of things (among many others) that caught my attention with girls, was that many of them have crooked teeth resulting in an imperfect smile, particularly the canines pushing forward in a vampiresque look. On the other hand however I don't see that many girls with dental correction so altogether was quite mysterious until few days ago when I finally found the answer....in Japan teeth imperfections are considered cute!!Apparently some men find the imperfect smile as attractive, childlike...they even have a word to describe this which is Yaeba (literally double tooth). This subject is so popular that there are even dental clinics offering the possibility to get Yaeba implants for those with "straight" teeth, called "Tsukeyaeba" (added Yaeba). The most stunning thing I read is that the owner of one of these clinics in Ginza decided, as a marketing campaign, to sponsor a J-Pop band called TYB48 (playing with the word TsukeYaeba and the famous J-Pop band AKB48) which is composed by three girls all with yaeba smile! so, how do you like this? Amazing isn't it?...we, in western countries, paying to align teeth and here they are paying to disalign them! But well, it's true that at the end who defines the rules of beauty?  everyone to his one taste :)

Halloween´12...blood & hot!!

I un any més ha arribat Halloween a Tokyo! Des de feia setmanes que els aparadors i les botigues n`anaven plens i finalment aquest cap de setmana va ser la nit "oficial",  i déu ni do quina nit de Halloween la del dissabte...ja ho dic jo que una altra cosa no, però passar-s'ho bé els japonesos en saben un tros. Aquesta festa tan arrelada a la cultura americana sembla que a poco a poc també s'està establint al Japó, almenys a les grans ciutats,  i bé diria que els hi escau com anell al dit, és més la seva és una celebració evolucionada...no pas pel tema cultural però per les peculiars disfresses, aquí el que compte és disfressar-se i fer gatzara. Aquí la nit més fosca de l'any va acompanyada de molta sang i zombies però també hi ha molta picaresca femenina i faldilla curta. Ara per sobre de tot va acompanyada d'un ambient molt divertit, i és que hi ha cada personatge que no vegis! Aquest any vàrem anar a Shibuya i la festa que hi havia al carrer a center gai (literalment carrer central, mític del barri), va ser memorable. Aquí us deixo unes instantànies que vaig fer amb el mòbil (a bona hora vaig decidir deixar la càmara a casa!!) més algunes que he trobat per la xarxa perquè us en feu una idea. 

And another year Halloween came to Tokyo! Since weeks ago the event was already present in shops and finally this last weekend we had the "official" celebration, and what a Halloween night...I tell you that if nothing else, Japanese knows a bit of how to party!. This celebration so integrated in the american culture seems to slowly make as well its place in this country, at least in the big cities, and well based on my experience I would say it fits very well here. I'd even say that they have their own evolved celebration...and not much for the cultural aspects but rather the party and costume's style being used. Here the scariest night of the year comes evenly with blood or zombies and short skirts...but above all it comes with lots of fun! So, this year we went to Shibuya and the street party we found at center gai (literally centrat street, ) was memorable. Here some pics I took with my phone (damn me I left the camera at home!) plus some other I found on the net so that you can get a better idea.

Creativitat contra el fred - Anti-cold creativity

Doncs sí...tot i que aquí no tenim un hivern tan dur com a Europa també fa fred!...ja us he explicat anteriorment que el problema és que degut a la manca d'aïllament d'edificis i falta de sistemes de calefacció adequats, aquí el fred se't posa als ossos i l'arrossegues tot el dia!! En una altra societat, per millorar això segurament es remetrien a les causes del problema, al Japó... no i això ha derivat en haver de tirar de creativitat per tal de passar els hiverns d'una forma més suportable. Aquí van les més destacades:


Yes...even though our winter is not as tough as in Europe here it's also cold!...I already talked about this issue before, all comes due to the bad buildings isolation and a lack of proper heating systems, turning in a cold feeling that we keep all day long!! In another society to solve it probably would act on the causes of the problem, in Japan...don't and this has turned up in many creative ideas to make a more bearable winter. Here some of my favourites:


1. Mantes!! opció clàssica arreu del món, molts bars i restaurants ofereixen mantes, la particularitat és que aquí són per ús...interior!! Imagineu-vos anant a dinar i a dins cobrin-te amb una manta!! Val a dir que ajuda.


1. Blankets!! classic option all over the world, usually bars and restaurants offer them, the particularity here is that they are used...indoors!! Try to see the picture of going out for lunch and eating with a blanket on top! Of course it helps.

2-Compreses de calor!! El meu favorit!! Els arxi-coneguts Hokkairo! un negoci d'extrema importància els hiverns japonesos. Es tracta d'uns sobres que escalfen, i déu ni do la feina que fan! Quan obres un sobre es produeix una reacció exotèrmica en contacte amb l'oxigen i genera escalfor tot el dia! Al mercat n'hi ha de tot tipus i colors, grans, petits, per les mans, pels peus i molt barats. Enorme oferta comercial però és que la demanda no es queda curta, segons la meva experiència diria que gairebé tothom n'utilitza, i no un no...dos, tres o fins i tot quatre!! Gran descobriment!!


2-Heat pads!! My favourite!!! These are the well-known Hokkairo! a very important business at winter time. As their name says these are pads that heat...and for god's sake they do! When you open a packaging there is an exotermic reaction in contact with oxygen and start to producing heat that last all day long! In the market you can find lots of types and colours, big or little size, especial for hands or feet  and generally very cheap. So a huge offer but actually the demand is not short, based on my experience I would say that almost everyone uses them, and not one but...two, three or even four!!

3. Roba interior tèrmica: en si no sona molt sofisticat però un element hiper popular al Japó. Es tracta d'una línia de roba interior tèrmica, HeatTech, feta amb unes fibres especials i molt lleugera. Comercialitzada per UniQlo (el Zara japonès) és increibe la penetració de mercat que han aconseguit....a mi sobretot em va xocar les malles interior tèrmiques per homes...us asseguro que molts homes, siguin joves o grans, estudiants o salarymen, molts els utilitzen en el seu dia a dia i bé com a mínim posats, us puc assegurar que la imatge que dóna es bastant curiosa...ei però al final s'ha de reconèixer que funcionen molt bé! :)

3.Termic underwear: maybe doesn't sound very sophisticated but it's very popular in Japan, and mostly thanks to UniQlo (Japanese Zara), who develop a special line of clothes called HeatTech made with special fibers and very light. Amazing the market penetration ...and well for me the shocking thing were the underpants for men...I tell you, lots of men, young and elderly, students or salarymen, use them in their daily life, just as another element of their usual clothing. Certainly the look when wearing them is at least curious...at the end however I reckon it works very well :)

El dia de la canalla - The kids' day

Dissabte passat una d'aquelles situacions peculiars...estava voltant en bici per Tokyo, a Akasaka, un districte més aviat administratiu i de grans edificis quan de sobte em trobo una nena amb vestit tradicional sortint d'un temple allà al mig...i clar jo que hi vaig entrar directament i un cop a dins estava ple de famílies amb canalla petita, tots vestits amb kimono (nenes) i hakana (nens)...resulta que estaven celebrant el festival Shichigosan (literalment ¨7-5-3¨), el festival dels nens que se celebra als voltants del 15-Nov. Les famílies de nens de 5 o 7 anys i nenes de 3 o 7 anys, van al temple local per demanar que tinguin un futur sa i segur. Aquestes edats són considerades molt importants en la cultura japonesa i encara avui dia és una tradició molt arrelada...i per un estranger ignorant com jo un espectacle molt divertit i interessant...els nens vestits de forma exquisida i els pares i avis tirant-se fotos ben orgullosos i rebossant felicitat...un gran descobriment! 


Last saturday I was in one of this particular situations...hanging around Tokyo by bike, in Akasaka, an administrative district with mostly skyscrapers, suddenly I saw a girl dressed with traditional clothing going out from a shrine...and of course I headed there immediately and once inside it was packed with families with children, all dressed with kimono (girls) and hakana (boys)...it turned out they were celebrating the Shichigosan festival (translated as "7-5-3"), the festival of children which is held around Nov 15 every year. Families with five-year and seven-year old boys and three-year and seven-year old girls, go to the local shrine to pray for a healthy and safe future of the kids.  Apparently these ages are very important in the japanese culture and still nowadays this is a very popular tradition...and for an ignorant foreigner as me a great sight with priceless moments...the kids dressed perfectly and their parents and grandparents taking pictures with pride and joy...a very nice discovery!

De compres sota la pluja - Shopping under the rain

Ahir vaig anar a Shibuya a fer quatre compres urgents pel pis i tot i que plovia a bots i barrals estava a rebentar de gent, que dius ja són ganes perquè amb tot el que queia gaudir-ne doncs no massa...en fi el tema és que si ja és peculiar un dia de compres normal, sota la pluja va ser encara millor. Alguns punts interessants: 
Yesterday I went to Shibuya because I needed to do some urgent shopping for the apartment and although it was raining like hell there was people everywhere, so if in a regular day it's already particular, under the rain the atmosphere was even better. Some interesting points:


-D'entrada jo vaig sortir amb el meu paraigua petit de taronja cutre regal dels amics d'Ikea (segur que a més d'un li sona)...error! "cantava com una almeja" allà al mig, tothom amb paraigua llarg i com més gran millor. 
Firstly, I took my little orange umbrella from our folks of Ikea (I'm sure most of you also have it)...mistake! I was completely out of place, the umbrellas must be large and the bigger, the better.

-Després a l'entrada de les botigues et trobes un aparell que només treuen quan plou que serveix per embolcallar el paraigua i evitar que degoti a dins, molt sofisticat!
Then at the entrance of the stores there is a machine that they only use when rains, and it's used to cover the umbrellas to avoid dripping, really sophisticated!

-Un cop a la botiga, el millor, tu fas les teves compres i quan pagues si de normal ja són extremadament curosos (penseu que la persona de caixa et posa un a un els articles a la bossa, els delicats els emboliquen amb el film aquest que té les boletes per rebentar i al final si pesa "molt" la bossa, et posen un protector a la nança perquè no et faci mal a la mà!), quan plou cobreixen les bosses amb una altra bossa transparent per evitar que no es mulli, no té preu!!!
Once inside, the best, you do your shopping and at the cashier if usually they are already extremely careful (think that they put each one of the items individualy into the bag, the delicates ones wrapped with this film for fragile stuff and if the bag is "heavy", they put a protector in the handle!), when it rains they cover the shopping bag with another one to avoid gets wet, priceless!!!

-I evidentment al final, vaig aprendre que el paraigua no es pot portar de qualsevol manera, només faltaria!; s'ha de portar amb estil mig penjat del braç...la moda per davant de tot!! 
And obviously at the end, I learnt that you cannot wear the umbrella in any way, of course! one have to wear it with style, hanging from the arm,...fashion over all!

Cosplay

Si fa uns dies us parlava de la banda urbana dels rockabillies, aprofito la visita al Tokyo Game Show per presentar-vos un altre estil, els cosplay, probablement l'estil que té més seguidors arreu. Els cosplay (de l'anglès "costume play") van néixer als anys 80 i es tracta de gent generalment jove ques es disfressa de personatges famosos de manga, anime, pelis o el que sigui...la veritat és que és espectacular de veure, s'ho curren un pilot i ja se'n van ocórrer algunes idees pel pròxim carnaval de Torelló :-). Al festival n'estava ple, gent sola, en parelles o en grups, i tots es tiraven fotos per després intercanviar-se-les com els cromos del pannini! Fins i tot hi va haver un concurs per escollir el millor cosplayer.
Per cert, per qui en vulgui veure els podeu trobar també a Tokyo cada diumenge a l'entrada del Yoyogi park al capdamunt del carrer Omotesando.


If some days ago I wrote about the urban band of the rockabillies, I take the opportunity of the visit at the Tokyo Game Show to introduce you another style, the cosplay, probably the style that has more followers around the world. The cosplay (from the English "costume play") were born in the 80s and is generally young people dressed up of famous characters from manga, anime, movies or whatever...honestly is quite espectacular to see, they work a lot on it, actually I took some ideas from the next carnival :-). There were lots of them in the festival, people alone, in couples or groups and all were taking pictures of themselves to afterwards exchange them with other cosplayers as the typical collection of stickers! There was even a contest to choose the best cosplayer. 
Btw, for those who want to see them, you can also find them in Tokyo every Sunday in front of the Yoyogi park at the end of Omotesando st.
