Unes vacances molt especials! - A very special holidays!

Per fi vacances...i quines vacances!! Aprofitant la festivitat d'Obon, una setmana amb un parell de festius dedicat al record dels ancestres, vaig aprofitar per fer una escapada d'una setmana per visitar les illes Seto, un arxipèlag de petites illes ubicades al mar interior que hi ha entre dues de les grans illes, Honshu i Shikoku. El que destaca en aquestes illes, és que algunes d'elles amb l'illa de Naoshima al capdavant, s'han transformat en un referent de l'arquitectura i l'art contemporani en un entorn totalment salvatge i natural. Al 2009 quan vaig visitar el Japó per primera vegada ja vàrem anar fins a Naoshima i em vaig quedar fascinat, fins al punt que segurament ho catalogaria com la recomenació número 1 en aquest país. Al tornar al Japó doncs, tenia molt clar que volia fer-hi una altra visita, més quan vaig saber que altres illes al voltant també han seguit la mateixa tònica, i encara més quan vaig llegir que aquest 2013 hi havia la segona Trienal d'Art a la regió, la Setouchi Triennale, on a banda de les obres i exposicions permanents s'hi afegíen multitud de treballs artístics temporals repartits per totes aquestes illes. Així doncs, finalment aquest estiu 2013, acompanyat de l'Aquiles, gran artista millor persona, hi vàrem fer cap. Impressionant viatge, una setmana espectacular visitant les illes de Naoshima, Teshima, Inujima i Shodoshima, acompanyats d'un sol espetarrant, platja, bon menjar, arquitectura japonesa i molt d'art contemporani!  La mescla realment sona tan captivadora com va ser, la majoria d'aquestes illes tenen un tamany tan petit que et permet voltar-les en bici o fins i tot a peu, envoltades d'un entorn natural majestuós amb muntanyes verdes i platges perdudes, i amb escassa, escassíssima presència humana. Aquest darrer punt és just una de les raons principals de tot aquest moviment i un reflexe del problema que es viu al Japó rural actual, on cada vegada hi ha més regions despoblades degut a la migració interna cap a les àrees urbanes i els pocs que queden acostumen a ser generacions d'edat avançada...d'aquí que es decidís apostar per la creació de valor cultural com una forma de revitalitzar aquestes illes encantadores però amb futur compromès.

Finally holidays...and what a holidays!! Taking advantage of the Obon festivity, a week with a couple of bank holidays dedicated to remember the ancestors, I took the opportunity to go down to Seto Islands for a week, an archipelago of small islands in the Inland Sea of Japan between Honshu and Shikoku. What stands out there is that some of them with Naoshima in front, have become a reference for architecture and contemporary art in a wild and natural environment. In 2009 when I first visited Japan, we already visited Naoshima and I was fascinated, up to the point where I would probably consider it as my top recommendation in Japan. So when I came back to Japan I was determined to visit it again, more when I knew that there are other islands with the same approach, and even more when I read that in 2013 it would be held the second Triennale of art in the region, the Setouchi Triennale, where besides the permanent works there will be many temporary along the year. So finally, this summer, together with my friend Aquiles, we headed down there. Amazing trip, a wonderful week visiting the islands of Naoshima, Teshima, Inujima and Shodoshima, all along with an incredible weather, beach, good food, japanese architecture and lots of contemporary art! The blend sounds as captivating as it was, most of these islands are so small that one can visit them by bike or even walking, surrounded by a fantastic natural environment with green mountains and hidden beaches, and with scarce human presence around. This last point is actually one of the main reasons of all this movement and a reflection of the current issue in rural Japan, where every time more there are deserted regions due to the internal migration to urban areas and the few remaining are usually people of advanced age...so it was decided to invest in the creation of cultural value as a way to revitalize these lovely islands that had an uncertain future.

Naoshima: en aquesta illa és on va començar tot, de manera filantròpica la Benesse foundation va tenir la visio de revitalizar les illes i la communitat a través d'inversions en art i arquitectura, creant un binomi estratègic amb un dels grans arquitectes contemporanis del Japó, Tadao Ando, el qual està transformant l'illa pas a pas amb projectes com el Benesse House museu, el museu de Lee Ufan o sobretot el museu Chichu, un espai simplement brutal! A banda, la municipalitat va decidir engegar un projecte artístic, Art House Project Naoshima, cedint cases i espais abandonats a artistes per tal que desevolupéssin les seves obres, de tal forma que tot passejant per l'illa es pot anar gaudint d'obres de primer nivell d'artistes com James Turrell, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Rei Naito, els banys públics transformats amb l'estil de Shinro Ohtake o les carabasses de Yayoi Kusama, un dels signes més singulars de l'illa!

Naoshima: this is the island where everything began, in a philanthropic way, the Benesse foundation had the vision to revitalize the island and its community through investment in art and architecture, building a strategic alignment with one of the big contemporary architects of Japan, Tadao Ando, who little by little has been transforming the island with projects such Benesse House museum, Lee Ufan museum or above all the Chichu Museum, a must see for everyone! Besides, it was created an artistic project called Art House Project Naoshima which basically let renowed artists to create their work in abandoned house or places around the island, so that one can walk around enjoying of artworks from people such James Turrell, Hiroshi Sugimoto or Rei Naito, as well as visiting the Public bath transformed by Shinro Ohtake or the colorful pumpkins from Yayoi Kusama, one if the island's icons!

Teshima: ubicada al costat de Naoshima, Teshima ens va encantar...de tamany més gran però població més reduïda, la visita a aquesta illa va ser realment interessant. La caracteritza una orografia amb grans desnivells ideal per visitar-la en bici...elèctrica! amb platges magnífiques i camps d'olivers que per moments semblava que fóssim al Mediterrani. Entre tot el que vàrem veure destacar el museu d'Art de Teshima, dissenyat per Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA) i treball artístic de Rei Naito, per mi el gran descobriment del viatge...increïble, genial, gairebé màgic! Un gran exemple d'equilibri entre l'arquitectura, l'art i entorn que et deixa amb la boca oberta. L'obra anomenada Matrix és un increible montatge de transformacio constant a través de gotes d'aigua que apareixen per tot arreu, de fet l'estructura mateixa té forma de gota d'aigua amb dues grans obertures ovals que deixen el pas a la llum, vent i ...aigua.

Teshima: next to Naoshima, Teshima was lovely...bigger but with lesser people, the visit was really interesting. The island is characterized by an orography with important slopes ideally to discover it by electric bike! It has very nice beaches and olive tree fields that reminded us being in the Mediterrenean! Among the different works we saw there is one that stands out, Teshima Art Museum, designed by Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA) and artwork by Rei Naito, for me was the best discovery of the trip...no words! It-s a great example of balance between architecture, art and environment! The art work named Matrix is an amazing work of continuous transformation through drops of water that appear from everywhere, actually the structure itself already is shaped like a drop of water with two big oval openings where light, wind and water can get through...all interconnected.

Inujima: la més petita de totes però no pas la menys interessant, de fet al poder-se visitar a peu li dóna un punt encara més atractiu. Inujima és territori Sejima (l'altre meitat del binomi SANAA) amb vàries obres dissenyades per aquesta arquitecta i altres obres de joves artistes prou creatius. En fi, una adorable illa remota i gairebé desèrtica, que realment ens va fer sentir lluny, molt lluny de tot!

Inujima: the smallest of all visited island but not the least interesting, actually the fact of being able to visit it walking, it even gives a better feeling. Inujima is Sejima's (the other half of the SANAA duo) land, with several works designed by this architect, as well as with many different artworks from young creative artists. All in one, an adorable experience in a remote island almost deserted that made us feel far, very far away from everything!



Shodoshima: la darrera parada del nostre viatge va ser en la que segurament seria la segona illa en quantitat d'obres i material, per contra però, també és una de les més grans en tamany fet que fa que tot estigui més repartit i tampoc et permet visitar-la còmodament al teu aire. Pel meu gust doncs, no va tenir el mateix encant que les altres, tot i això la vàrem aprofitar bastant bé visitant obres de referència com la "House of Sodoshima" de Wang Wen-Chih, una obra feta íntegrament amb bambú que ofereix un espectacle increïble de llums i colors. Just abans de marxar, l'altre iniciativa que em va cridar l'atenció va ser la visita a l'anomenada "Fukutake House". Es tracta d'una plataforma de col.laboracions entre artistes asiàtics prou interessant i és que ni més ni menys està ubicada en una antiga escola de primària avui tancada. A més, va acompanyada d'una altre obra d'en Nishizawa fínissima que va posar la cirereta al viatge. 

Shodoshima: the last stop in our trip was in what probably would be the second island in terms of work and material, but one of the biggest in size too. This results in works spread all over the island which makes it too big to visit on your own, so need to rely on the public transportation which is not very often (not many people in the island!). Nevertheless we could still visit quite a lot and saw some interesting pieces like the so-called "House of Shodoshima" by Wang Wen-Chih, a work made entirely of bamboo with a show of light and colors. Then just before departing, we saw another initiative that also drew my attention, the "Fukutake House" which has been created as a platform of collaboration between artists based in Asia quite interesting particularly because the venue was quite special...an old elementary school! On top, the school hosts another piece from Nishizawa which is great and put the best end to our trip!

Cap de setmana als Alps!! - Weekend in the Alps!!

Ara que ja tenim l'estiu a tocar no hi ha res millor que una escapada a la muntanya per oblidar la calor i xafogor asfixiant de Tokyo i gaudir d'aire pur i naturalesa. I no serà per muntanyes en aquest país, diuen que al voltant d'un 70% del territori és muntanya!! Aquest cop doncs amb uns amics vàrem decidir explorar els Alps del nord a la regió de Kamikochi, ubicat a la prefectura de Nagano, no molt lluny de Matsumoto. Kamikochi és un parc natural al voltant d'un riu en un entorn meravellós al cor dels Alps. Des d'allà es poden fer multitud de rutes, en el nostre cas vàrem fer una ruta simple per pujar al Yake-dake, una muntanya que de fet és volcà i a sobre està actiu. L'ascencs, en dues parts, el dissabte més suau i boscós on el temps no ens va acompanyar i va estar plovent bastant, o sigui que no veiem el moment d'arribar al refugi.  El diumenge però ens vàrem llevar amb un dia radiant per acabar de pujar a la cima, que sense ser res d'altre món (2500m) es va transformar en un recorregut molt més ferèstec, rocós i exigent...sobretot quan perds el camí i acabes pujant per un lloc completament alternatiu, gairebé escalant :) Finalment vàrem arribar sense problema, i va pagar la pena doncs les vistes eren acollonants, realment em vaig teletransportar als Alps Suïssos amb la diferència que al girar el cap tenia un cràter fumejant! 

Feeling the summer already here, there is nothing better that an outing to the mountains to forget about the hot and humid Tokyo weather and enjoy the fresh air and nature of these country. And in Japan this is not a problem, with about 70% of mountainous territory, this country is great for hiking! This time, with some friends, we decided to head to the Northern-Alps, at the region called Kamikochi, in Nagano prefecture, not far from Matsumoto city. Kamikochi is a natural park along a river and surrounded by a wonderful environment at the heart of the Alps. From there there are plenty of hiking routes, we took an easy but interesting one, climbing Yake-dake, one of the few active volcanos of the Alps. We split the ascend in two parts, first on Saturday, quite easy and mostly into forests but we didn't have that good weather and was raining almost all the time, so we were really looking forward to get to the hut, which ended up being a cozy and comfortable place to overnight. On Sunday, luckily we woke up with a wonderful day ready to head up to the summit, which although not that high (2500m), it became a much more rocky and demanding....particularly when you loose the path and end up taking an alternative path almost climbing :) Finally we made it without major issue and it was really worthwhile since the views from the top were gorgeous, it reminded me my times in Switzerland, with the difference that when I turned my head, there was a steaming crater !  

















  



















I després de recuperar forces amb un bon plat de soba i un bany termal miraculós, camí de tornada a Matsumoto per agafar el tren cap a Tokyo, abans però visita obligada al famós castell de Matsumoto (Matsumoto-jo), un dels tresors nacionals del Japó i considerat un dels castells tradicionals més bonics del país...i sens dubte ho és.

And after recovering strength with a yummy meal of soba and relaxing in an Onsen, we headed back to Matsumoto to take the train back to Tokyo, before however there was a mandatory stopover to see the Matsumoto castle (Matsumoto-jo), one of the National Treasures of Japan and considered one of the most beautiful traditional castles remaining...and so it is!  

Messi...kimoshiii!!!

Aprofitant la setmana de consagració de Messi com el rei absolut del fútbol, aquí us comparteixo la campanya publicitària que protagonitza al Japó amb una empresa de cosmètics locals, Anfa. Molts ja l'haureu vist, i és que la imatge de Messi parlant o potser millor, intentant parlar Japonès ha fet la volta al molt, tot i que tampoc es pot dir que sigui molt difícil ;) Sigui com sigui suposo que li deuen haver pagat una pasta però de ben segur que la campanya és un èxit, la imatge de Messi, el jugador de futbol de lluny més conegut, està bastant per tot arreu i tothom coneix la campanya. En els anuncis on es publicita un producte per rentar-se la cara, la intervenció de Messi es resumeix en dues frases "Messi kimochi" i "Messi mo, Anfa mo nijugo sai" que vindria a ser "Em sento Messi" i "Messi i Anfa tenen 25 anys", i és que la campanya s'ha fet per cel.lebrar els 25 anys d'aquesta empresa. Ara bé, el tema que ha cridat l'atenció per aquí ha estat la pronunciació de Messi, i és que sobretot en la primera frase enlloc de pronunciar "kimo-chi" se li escapa un "kimo-shhi" bastant divertit. Els meus amics que se'n foten bastant em diuen "però és tan complicat pronunciar-ho correctament?" i jo "és que és l'accent argentí...", en fi ja sabem que el fort d'en Messi no serien els idiomes, millor que es dediqui a jugar futbol...i per molts anys!.

Taking the opportunity of Messi's consagration week as the king of football, I want to share with you the advertising campaign that he is starring in Japan with a local cosmetics company called Anfa. You may have already seen the CM since Messi's image speaking or better say trying to speak Japanese was a worldwide hit, even though if what he says in principle doesn't look that much difficult ;) In any case, the campaign which probably cost a fortune to this company is certainly a success, Messi's image, who's very popular here, is everywhere and everyone knows about the campaign.  The CM advertise a face wash cream and Messi's intervention is summarized in two sentences "Messi kimochi" and "Messi mo, Anfa mo nijugo sai" which means "I feel Messi" and "Messi and Anfa are 25 years old", basically the company celebrates its 25th anniversary. However what's been more commented here is Messi's pronunciation, particularly in the first sentence where instead of "kimo-CHI" he says a funny "kimo-shhii". My JP friends makes fun of him on this and ask me whether is that complicated to pronounce it correctly, to which I answer it maybe his argentinean accent...although we all know that Messi's strength is not precisely languages...he should better keep playing football, and hopefully for long time!

Oshogatsu (New Year) - part II

L'any nou Japonès (Oshogatsu) està ple de tradicions, si en l'anterior post us parlava del Hatsumode, altres activitats típiques són les postals d'any nou (similars a la nostra tradició de les postals de Nadal, aquí els primers dies de l'any se'n troben per tot arreu) o l'anomenada otoshidama (tradició de donar diners de pares a fills en forma de regal d'any nou). Més enllà d'això com a bona societat sibarita que són, el menjar també juga un paper mooolt important amb l'anomenat Osechi Ryori o menjar japonès d'any nou, una tradició amb més de mil anys d'història i que evidentment jo tenia molt d'interès de provar i bé...vaig ser tan afortunat que en Manabu, un bon amic japonès, em va convidar a casa seva a passar el dinar d'any nou amb la seva família!! Val a dir que aquí no tothom el conviden a casa de un i menys en dies tan especials o sigui que per a mi va ser tot un honor!! L'experiència va ser absolutament fantàstica, són tan amables i considerats que evidentment em van fer sentir com el rei de la casa!
La veritat és que l'any nou Japonès em va recordar bastant al nostre dia de Nadal, el dinar sol començar bastant tard però també acaba molt tard engantxant-se amb el sopar, et passes el dia menjant i bevent! Entremig, un clàssic són els programes televisió especials d'any nou amb tot tipus de shows 100% japonesos i evidentment les competicions esportives, ara, aquí enlloc del tradicional salts d'esquí tenen el torneig nacional de futbol d'instituts seguit per milions de persones per tot el país!.
L'experiència de l'Osechi ryori va ser molt interessant, es tracta de menjar fet per aguantar diversos dies, diuen que es va començar a fer com a forma de subsistència ja que durant el període d'oshogatsu com que hi havia tots els establiments tancats, era molt difícil aproveir-se i s'havia de buscar coses que aguantéssin diversos dies. Es serveix en unes capses especials, anomenades jubako, similars als bento i avui dia la gran majoria es compra ja preparat en grans magatzems o fins i tot en les botigues de conveniència, per sort en el nostre cas però va ser tot fet a casa i és que a la mare d'en Manabu li agrada molt cuinar. La particularitat de l'Osechi ryori és que cada producte té una significació especial, per exemple hi ha kuromame (mongetes negres) com a símbol de salut pel nou any, konbu (algues) com a símbol de felicitat, tazukuri (sardines seques en salsa soja) com a símbol de bona collita (arròs) o kazunoko (ous d'arengada) com a símbol de fertilitat. En fi, un munt de combinacions de preparacions molt japoneses i amb resultats molt peculiars pels paladars occidentals però també molt bo.
Per rematar-ho, acabat al dinar, estava tan posat en la tradició que fins i tot vaig tenir el plaer de provar per primera vegada un kimono japonès verdader! i no era un kimono qualsevol sinó un que venia d'herència de diverses generacions o sigui amb molta història al darrera però en un estat que estava nou.  Déu ni do, el que costa posar-se un kimono, d'entrada ja us dic que sol no te'l pots posar i és que al final vaig acabar portant quatre capes de roba a sobre, evidentment amb tot això haig de reconèixer que gaire còmode no és...ara l'experiència un 10!

The Japanese new year (Oshogatsu) is full of traditions, if in the previous post I talked about the Hatsumode, other typical activities also include the new year's postcards (quite similar to our postcards for Christmas, but here you find them a bit later, only for few days but in each single corner of the city) or the so called otoshidama (tradition to give money from parents to children as a present for new year). Beyond that and as a good gourmet society, food also plays a central role with what they called Osechi ryori or the Japanese new year's food, a tradition with more than thousand years of history and that of course I was really looking forward it...so, I was so lucky that Manabu, a good Japanese friend, invited me to his parents place to share a new year's lunch with his family!! Considering that here in Japan is not that common that you receive this kind of invitation and moreover in such an special date, it was a great honour for me!! The experience was absolutely fantastic, they are so kind and considered that obviously made me feel as a real honorary guest!!
The Japanese new year celebration reminded me quite a lot to our Christmas day, their lunch usually starts quite late so does the finishing time, overlapping with the dinner so you are drinking and eating all day long! In between, a classical are the special TV shows for new year's with all kind of programs 100% japanese style as well as sport competitions, however instead of the traditional European ski jumps, here they have the national football tournament of high-schools which is followed by millions of people all over the country!
The Osechi ryori experience was really interesting, this preparation began as a way to stock food for several days since during oshogatsu everything is closed (especially longtime ago) and so it was hardly possible to buy fresh products and they had to find preparations that could preserve several days. Osechi it is served in special boxes, similar to Bento called Jubako and nowadays most of the people buys it already prepared from department stores or even convenience stores, in our case however It was an exception since Manabu's mother always prepare it at home...yummy. There many different food or preparations in Osechi ryori and the particularity is that each one has a special meaning, for instance there is kuromame (black beans) as a symbol of health in the new year, konbu (seaweed) as a symbol of joy, tazukuri (dried sardines in soy sauce) as a symbol of abundant harvest (rice) or kazunoko (herring roe) as a symbol of fertility. So, the result a deep introduction to traditional japanese preparations, most unknown by westerners but with s really good taste.

After all these yummy food, I was so integrated in the Japanese tradition that I ended up wearing a kimono :)! My first time wearing a real Japanese kimono, and not just any kimono but one that was inherited from various generations in the family...and was still like new! What a job to get into a kimono...I tell you it took me a while and certainly something you cannot do alone, at the end I was wearing 4 layers of clothes which certainly makes it not very comfortable to wear for long time, that`s why nowadays this is only reserved for special occasions, and so special was that one!
