Treball de communitat al barri / Community work in the neighborhood

Those little things that keep surprising me in this country. This morning I went out direction to the subway heading to work, and when I was at halfway of my street, suddenly a group of office workers step out holding a garbage bag on one hand and tongs in the other to collect litter from the street!!  The image was unique, men and women with office dress code wearing spotless suits and shirts cleaning the streets. All wearing their employee ID and an armband with the company's name, altruistically collaborating to the maintenance of our neighborhood. Great example of community work in Japan!

Fuji Rock Festival...rocks!!!

A sota us deixo unes fotos!! Visca el Fuji Rock!

Another resolution for this year that came true…Fuji Rock Festival! Together with my dear couple of friends, Dai and Nati, we headed to the mountains to enjoy one of the most important music festivals in Asia, if not the most. And even with high expectations, the result didn’t disappoint us at all, great weekend! Although its name, the current festival is not held at Fuji (only the first edition was there in 1997) but in a location that during winter time is the resort ski area of Naeba. Between magnificent natural landscapes there is the festival with stages everywhere, it is that huge that you can spend hours going around! The festival has long tradition in the country and it is well known particularly for its instable weather, and I can guarantee this…as soon it is sunny as it is raining cats and dogs! This is the unofficial brandmark of the festival where everyone knows that will finish wet and/or muddy, the standard profile of the participants are rain boots, rain coat size XXL and a foldable chair, with this it may be sunny or rainy, people will rest and enjoy the festival. As usual in Japan, the event was very well organized and particularly clean compared to other Festivals in Europe.  The atmosphere was great and surprisingly very familiar, was amazing to see so many parents with their children going around, really nice! And so many different and crazy, people wearing colorful and costumes is already part of the Fuji Rock profile, we saw images really funny! So with such a good location and wonderful atmosphere, we just miss good music, and god we had it! This year’s line-up was awesome, the legendary The Cure in front but followed by lots of bands from Japan and overseas that made us our day!! Below some pics!

Curiosity of the day...I already posted about religion in Japan, here in general people don't seem to be that much into it but when you ask them, most would declare themselves so, more for tradition than beliefs but usually they will say they are either buddhists, shintoists or the most common, following both religions. However, if you spend some time in Tokyo, one can think that beyond their traditional religions many japanese are christian as well since it is quite common to see people wearing christian symbols, particularly the cross, in a t-shirt, neckless or earrings...nothing further from the truth they just wear it because they like it, purely aesthetic! Similarly, the popularity of catholic style weddings is amazing. Yesterday though, I was faced to another example to freak out, when I got to the office I just realized the colleague in front of me had put a religious picture of virgin Maria in her desk!! At first, I fool myself thinking that she could be a christian person so when she came I asked her and...of course she told that even didn't know who was in that picture and simply like the drawing!  Although I'm not catholic, when I see these kind of examples I got quite surprised, these thin line between the sacred and the banality strikes me, and probably for many would even be quite disrespectful. Nonetheless, when you think twice about it, perhaps is not that different from the West using buddhist or hindu symbols without much understanding of what their represent, so I guess at the end everything is relative...

Res més relatiu que la bellesa - Nothing more debatable but beauty

Gran història la d'avui, 100% made in Japan. Què us sembla??

Great story today, 100% Japanese!. Since I came to Japan one of things (among many others) that caught my attention with girls, was that many of them have crooked teeth resulting in an imperfect smile, particularly the canines pushing forward in a vampiresque look. On the other hand however I don't see that many girls with dental correction so altogether was quite mysterious until few days ago when I finally found the answer....in Japan teeth imperfections are considered cute!!Apparently some men find the imperfect smile as attractive, childlike...they even have a word to describe this which is Yaeba (literally double tooth). This subject is so popular that there are even dental clinics offering the possibility to get Yaeba implants for those with "straight" teeth, called "Tsukeyaeba" (added Yaeba). The most stunning thing I read is that the owner of one of these clinics in Ginza decided, as a marketing campaign, to sponsor a J-Pop band called TYB48 (playing with the word TsukeYaeba and the famous J-Pop band AKB48) which is composed by three girls all with yaeba smile! so, how do you like this? Amazing isn't it?...we, in western countries, paying to align teeth and here they are paying to disalign them! But well, it's true that at the end who defines the rules of beauty?  everyone to his one taste :)

Taking the opportunity of Messi's consagration week as the king of football, I want to share with you the advertising campaign that he is starring in Japan with a local cosmetics company called Anfa. You may have already seen the CM since Messi's image speaking or better say trying to speak Japanese was a worldwide hit, even though if what he says in principle doesn't look that much difficult ;) In any case, the campaign which probably cost a fortune to this company is certainly a success, Messi's image, who's very popular here, is everywhere and everyone knows about the campaign.  The CM advertise a face wash cream and Messi's intervention is summarized in two sentences "Messi kimochi" and "Messi mo, Anfa mo nijugo sai" which means "I feel Messi" and "Messi and Anfa are 25 years old", basically the company celebrates its 25th anniversary. However what's been more commented here is Messi's pronunciation, particularly in the first sentence where instead of "kimo-CHI" he says a funny "kimo-shhii". My JP friends makes fun of him on this and ask me whether is that complicated to pronounce it correctly, to which I answer it maybe his argentinean accent...although we all know that Messi's strength is not precisely languages...he should better keep playing football, and hopefully for long time!

This is the first ad and central communication of the campaign...looks quite simple but I guess this is where it falls on the success of it!

Here the second ad, quite funny as well....

Nadal a Tokyo! - Christmas in Tokyo!

My first Christmas in Japan and well it's been clear that here it's not the same! Certainly because it's not the same with family and relatives being far away but it was also true that at the end in Japan people doesn't really care about Christmas. At first glance one could think it's quite similar to our Christmas or even more, Santa Claus running up and down, loud Christmas songs at the streets, illumination in all corners and Christmas decorations for all tastes...providing you can/want to pay for them, a simple Christmas tree made of plastic 95 euros and decorated with some balls and bows...260!!

Photobucket Photobucket

Decoration is something they like very much, likewise lighting. Many places of the city are illuminated these days with huge structures of light and colours where everyone wants to get a picture with, particularly couples...I guess they find the environment more romantic and special :). Moreover if there is one thing above all the rest is that Japanese get crazy for shopping and Christmas becomes the best excuse to buy presents and spend money (likewise in the west by the way), I would say I had never seen so many people in Shibuya doing shopping like on Christmas' eve. Beyond this very little to highlight...for young couples it seems that something traditional is to go out for a romantic dinner in a restaurant (I've been told reservations have to be made weeks in advance!). If you stay in family the main difference will be to eat a typical Christmas cake and for those more into it, the tradition would be to go to KFC (special Xmas menu at 50euros!). In my case, I went to a friends' house for a Christmas dinner with an authentic Swiss fondue and most importantly good company. The problem was that everyone went home very early...in Japan the 25th is a working day!. Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

Alright here it is the last news I heard around...and it's a good one, examples like this reaffirm the fact that in Japan everything is possible and show that certainly there is a sociological difference with the western mindset. The story is about someone who based on the observation that in this country there are lots of single (and lonely) people who lacks affection, there could be a business opportunity to fill this emotional gap. And how to do it? Here it comes the unconventional part...they decided to create a cuddle cafe business, so a place where one can have the possibility to sleep with an unknown girl. Yes, just sleeping no sex or any other thing you can imagine. They claim that to improve affection there is nothing better than sleeping cuddled to someone, and from here they built the first service of this type in the world. The place opened few weeks ago, called Soineya or "cuddle cafe" is located in Akihabara, the area for otakus (japanese term for geeks) and all kinds of extravagances. For what I've seen the service comes with young and cutes japanese girls (the so-called bijins) dressing short and quite sexy. Then, for the ¨reasonable¨ price of 60EUR you can sleep for 20min with one of these girls, and from here the price increases up to around 500EUR for 10h. In addition to the basic service, costumers can include all kinds of extras such as sleeping in girl's lap, receiving a foot massage or staring at each other for a while... (!!!). Really a surprising proposal, we'll see if it works, for the time being however they have already succeed being a hit in internet, below a video report explaining the concept (the presenter another character!). So, you see....innovation 100% Japanese, who said that in this country there was no entrepreneurship ? ;)

Al Kagaya, un comiat únic! - At Kagaya, a unique farewell!

Aquí us deixo unes fotos i vídeos...

When you live abroad, your social life becomes a constant movement of people leaving and arriving. These last weeks unfortunately, it´s more about farewells than arrivals, the latest has been Cesc (Sesuku for the japanese) who after expiring his visa will go to Southeast asia for a while. So as usual, we organized a kind of farewell, well in his case more rather "see you soon" since he will come back in some months. And well, well, well...what a farewell, one of the craziest experiences in Japan so far. Looking for a place to go a friend of us recommended Kagaya, an izakaya in Shimbashi, a popular neighborhood especially on working days since there are lots of yakitoris packed with salarymen. Jemima told us "go there, it's a unique experience..." and with this in mind we went there without knowing very well what we would find, and what we saw was indeed unique.  The place doesn´t say much at first, very small with only four tables, an old woman in the kitchen and the owner running around. But immediately we understood it was him the key character of that place, and what a character, a guy with a kind of bipolar behavior moving constantly from the driest seriousness to a complete madness. Altogether it was a real show, he spent all night doing performances and dirty jokes that especially made our japanese friends feel embarrassed of him, they couldn´t believe to see a japanese behaving like that!. At the end it was a singular experience and surely unforgettable for Cesc before leaving. Here sime pics and videos...some priceless.

And here the videos...the first one quite surrealistic. I would call it "Dick the frog"...as I said, the guy had quite a pervert sense of humor :)
