Nadal a Tokyo! - Christmas in Tokyo!

Primer nadal al Japó i què voleu que us digui això és una altra cosa! De ben segur perquè no és el mateix que cel.lebrar-ho al costat dels teus però en tot cas m'ha quedat clar que en el fons aquí això del Nadal ni els va ni els ve. A primera vista la cosa sembla que és bastant similar al nostre nadal o fins i tot més béstia, Pares Noels corrent amunt i avall, nadales sonant a tot drap, il.luminació en cada cantonada i decoracions de nadal per a tots gustos, això sí a uns preus que espanten...un  arbre de Nadal de plàstic ranci a 95 euros, i decorat amb quatre boles i llaços...260 euros!!! 

My first Christmas in Japan and well it's been clear that here it's not the same! Certainly because it's not the same with family and relatives being far away but it was also true that at the end in Japan people doesn't really care about Christmas. At first glance one could think it's quite similar to our Christmas or even more, Santa Claus running up and down, loud Christmas songs at the streets, illumination in all corners and Christmas decorations for all tastes...providing you can/want to pay for them, a simple Christmas tree made of plastic 95 euros and decorated with some balls and bows...260!!  



El tema decoració agrada i molt, així com les llums, molts racons de la ciutat s'il.luminen aquests dies amb grans estructures de colors que tothom busca immortalitzat en una instantània, sobretot les parelletes...suposo que per ells això dóna un aire més tendre i romàntic a l'ambient :). Ara  si una cosa m'ha quedat clara és que als Japonesos els hi agrada molt anar de compres, sent el Nadal la millor excusa per gastar i comprar regals. En això tampoc és que siguin molt diferents al nostre Nadal però sincerament crec que aquí la fervor consumista supera totes les expectatives, em sembla que mai havia vist tanta gent fent compres a Shibuya!! Més enllà d'això, per ells el Nadal poca cosa, per la gent jove el més típic és sortir a fer un sopar romàntic en parella (les reserves s'han de fer amb setmanes d'antel.lació!), per les famílies menjar un pastís de Nadal i pels més atrevits/entregats anar al Kentucky Fried Chicken (menú especial a 50 euros!). En el meu cas, vàrem fer un sopar de Nadal a casa d'uns amics amb una autèntica fondue suïssa i sobretot bona companyia, això sí gairebé tothom va retirar molt d'hora...al Japó el dia 25 toca treballar!. Espero que hagueu passat unes bones festes! 

Decoration is something they like very much, likewise lighting. Many places of the city are illuminated these days with huge structures of light and colours where everyone wants to get a picture with, particularly couples...I guess they find the environment more romantic and special :). Moreover if there is one thing above all the rest is that Japanese get crazy for shopping and Christmas becomes the best excuse to buy presents and spend money (likewise in the west by the way), I would say I had never seen so many people in Shibuya doing shopping like on Christmas' eve. Beyond this very little to highlight...for young couples it seems that something traditional is to go out for a romantic dinner in a restaurant (I've been told reservations have to be made weeks in advance!). If you stay in family the main difference will be to eat a typical Christmas cake and for those more into it, the tradition would be to go to KFC (special Xmas menu at 50euros!). In my case, I went to a friends' house for a Christmas dinner with an authentic Swiss fondue and most importantly good company. The problem was that everyone went home very early...in Japan the 25th is a working day!. Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

Halloween´12...blood & hot!!

I un any més ha arribat Halloween a Tokyo! Des de feia setmanes que els aparadors i les botigues n`anaven plens i finalment aquest cap de setmana va ser la nit "oficial",  i déu ni do quina nit de Halloween la del dissabte...ja ho dic jo que una altra cosa no, però passar-s'ho bé els japonesos en saben un tros. Aquesta festa tan arrelada a la cultura americana sembla que a poco a poc també s'està establint al Japó, almenys a les grans ciutats,  i bé diria que els hi escau com anell al dit, és més la seva és una celebració evolucionada...no pas pel tema cultural però per les peculiars disfresses, aquí el que compte és disfressar-se i fer gatzara. Aquí la nit més fosca de l'any va acompanyada de molta sang i zombies però també hi ha molta picaresca femenina i faldilla curta. Ara per sobre de tot va acompanyada d'un ambient molt divertit, i és que hi ha cada personatge que no vegis! Aquest any vàrem anar a Shibuya i la festa que hi havia al carrer a center gai (literalment carrer central, mític del barri), va ser memorable. Aquí us deixo unes instantànies que vaig fer amb el mòbil (a bona hora vaig decidir deixar la càmara a casa!!) més algunes que he trobat per la xarxa perquè us en feu una idea. 

And another year Halloween came to Tokyo! Since weeks ago the event was already present in shops and finally this last weekend we had the "official" celebration, and what a Halloween night...I tell you that if nothing else, Japanese knows a bit of how to party!. This celebration so integrated in the american culture seems to slowly make as well its place in this country, at least in the big cities, and well based on my experience I would say it fits very well here. I'd even say that they have their own evolved celebration...and not much for the cultural aspects but rather the party and costume's style being used. Here the scariest night of the year comes evenly with blood or zombies and short skirts...but above all it comes with lots of fun! So, this year we went to Shibuya and the street party we found at center gai (literally centrat street, ) was memorable. Here some pics I took with my phone (damn me I left the camera at home!) plus some other I found on the net so that you can get a better idea.

El formiguer humà - A human ant's nest

Que a Tokyo hi ha molta gent és ben sabut, doncs la densitat de població a la ciutat és de les més altes del món, i si hi ha un lloc on es pot veure aquest efecte clarament plasmat aquest és la cruïlla de Shibuya, sobradament reconeguda en totes les guies turístiques i de visita obligada quan s'està per la ciutat. Just a davant de la sortida Hachiko de l'estació et trobes amb aquest espectacle humà a qualsevol hora del dia,  on una cruïlla envoltada de grans edifics, llums i pantalles de neó, es transforma en un niu de formigues humanes...això sí un espectacle intermitent que no dura més d'un minut, o sigui que ja us ho podeu imaginar...el contrast és brutal,  les primeres vegades que ho veus et venen ganes de quedar-te a observar tot el moviment i l'entorn durant una bona estona, de fet ja hi ha un punt d'observació ben conegut en una cafeteria Starbucks situada just a primera fila (al video és l'edifici que surt a davant) que sembla ben bé que estiguis al ¨palco¨ del millor teatre de la ciutat. 

It's well known that in Tokyo there is lots of people, actually is one of the cities with the biggest population's density in the world, and if there is a place where one can clearly sees it this is the Shibuya crossroads, a highlight in all tourist guides and a must for anyone visiting the city. Placed just in front of the Hachiko exit of the station it is a real show at any time of the day, a crossroads surrounded by huge buildings, neon screens and lights that becomes like a human ant's nest...however intermittently with like an endless show that doesn't last more than a minute every time. The contrast is amazing, my first times there I could just spent my time looking at it and actually there is already a famous observation spot at the Starbucks located just in front of it (in the video it's in the building in front) that looks like the best seats of a theatre waiting for a show... a live show.
