Karaoke de disfresses - Costumes karaoke

Entre moltes de les coses que vàrem fer amb en D&D...cal destacar una visita a un karaoke de disfresses!! Ja us ho he comentat alguna vegada la passió que hi ha al Japó pels karaokes, es tracta d'un esdeveniment social molt comú i molt divertit. A diferència dels karaokes europeus aquí es tracta de sales privades on cadascú es monta la festa, cantar, menjar, beure o dormir...i bé aquest cap de setmana passat vàrem anar en un karaoke especial on a banda de cantar també et podies disfressar i bé us deixo algunes fotos perquè veieu el resultat...


Amongst many things we did with D&D...I want to highlight the visit to a costume karaoke!! I've already mentioned before that Japanese feel the karaoke with real passion being a common social event. Unlike the typical karaokes in europe here everyone books his own private room and make their own party, singing, eating, drinking or sleeping...and well this last weekend we went to a special karaoke where besides singing you could also use different costumes to dress you up, so here some pictures to see the result...

aquesta setmana he estat bastant ocupat i és que he estat amb una visita molt especial...els "americanos", els meus amics Dani i Danielle han vingut directament de Chicago per visitar-me i viatjar pel Japó. La primera visita després del terratrèmol! I bé ha estat una setmana molt intensa i com és habitual de ruta gastronòmica per la ciutat, yakitori (brotxetes), sushi al mercat del peix, okonomiyaki (pizzes japoneses), ramen (fideus) o nabe (cassserola japonesa)...mmm

I've been quite busy this last week since I was with a special visit...my friends Dani and Danielle, came directly from Chicago to visit me and travel around Japan. This was special not only for them but because it was the first visit after quake too! Thus it's been a busy week and as usual we really enjoyed of the different gastronomic variety of Tokyo, yakitori (chicken skewers), sushi from Tsukiji market, oknomiyaki (japanese pancakes), ramen (noodles) or nabe (japanese hot pot)...mmm

M'ha agradat molt que s'hagi decidit donar el Premi Internacional Catalunya 2011 a Haruki Murakami, continua la connexió catalana-japonesa! probablement l'escriptor japonès més conegut internacionalment i des que el vaig descobrir un dels meus favorits també, Com ja haureu sentit en la recepció del premi, Murakami ja va dir que ho donaria tot per ajudar l'àrea de Tohoku i sobretot va fer un discurs molt crític en contra l'energia nuclear fins al punt que la notícia també ha arribat al Japó on alguns mitjans s'han fet ressò d'aquesta crítica.
I bé, sembla que Murakami no està sol...ahir es van complir 3 mesos del terratrèmol i les organitzacions antinuclears van organitzar manifestacions per tot Tokyo, curiosament a diferència de les nostres aquí en van fer moltes durant tot el dia en diferents punts de la ciutat. Vaig arribar-me a la que van fer a Shinjuku i déu ni do, hi havia un ambient interessant interessant...per fi els japonesos s'han aixecat i han dit prou! Una gran mobilització de gent, cridant, saltant i xiulant però evidentment molt pacíficament. Tot i això el desplegament policial va ser molt béstia, jo diria que mai havia vist tal concentració de policia, això sí desarmats i sense porres...us deixo un vídeo i quatre fotos.


I really liked that the 2011 International Catalonia Prize was for Haruki Murakami, proud to see the Catalans recognized him to deserve this award since he is certainly the most well-known japanese writer nowadays and I must say one of my favourites too! In his speech in Barcelona, Murakami said that the prize will go to Tohoku relief efforts and did a strong anti-nuke position, criticism that even drew the attention of some media in Japan reporting it in their news.
And well, it seems Murakami is not alone...yesterday did 3 months since the earthquake and several anti-nuke groups, organized several  demonstrations around Tokyo, curiously unlike us where usually there is a single big demonstration, here they organized several demonstration all day long in different places of Tokyo. I took part of the last one in Shinjuku and well, the atmosphere was very lively, people shouting, jumping or whistling but of course all done peacefully. Nevertheless the number of policemen was huge, I think I've never seen such a big concentration of police...but at least they were disarmed and everything went well.

Tokyo Sky Tree

Ahir al diari vaig llegir que ja han posat preu a l'entrada a la nova Tokyo Sky Tree (o sigui la torre de l'arbre del cel). Aquesta torre és la nova nineta dels ulls de la ciutat i tot i que no estarà acabada fins el 2012 ja és avui l'edifici més alt de Tokyo, i quan estigui acabada amb els seus 634metres (!!!) serà la segona storre de telecomunicacions més alta del món (la primera és una torre a Dubai). En tot cas, el que em va cridar l'atenció és que ja li han posat preu, 3000 iens per pujar-hi!!barato barato no és que diguem i ahir la premsa en va fer bastant rebombori (mireu el vídeo) però bé personalment crec que pagarà la pena, no cada dia es pot dinar a 600 metres d'altura...
La torre està a prop del barri d'Asakusa al costat del riu Sumida en una zona de gran renovació urbana. 


I was reading yesterday that there is already a fixed price ticket for the new Sky Tree Tower. This tower which is the new tourist attraction in the city is already nowadays the tallest building in Tokyo, even though the construction won't be completed till 2012, and once done it will be a 634m tower, the second biggest telecom tower in the world (first one being in Dubai). In any case what drew my attention is the price fixed for the ticket, 3000 iens!!! it wouldn't be cheap precisely and thus yesterday many media criticized it and made comparisons with other towers (see the video), but well personally I think it will be worthwhile, no everyday one can eat at 600m height...
The tower is located nearby Asakusa, next to the Sumida river in an area of large urban regeneration.

Visita a Tohoku - Visit to Tohoku

aquesta setmana vaig anar fins a Tohoku, l'àrea més propera al nucli del terratrèmol. Va ser una visita curta ja que sols vàrem anar per feina a visitar la universitat de Tohoku que està a Sendai, capital de la prefectura. O sigui que de bon matí vàrem agafar el shinkansen i camí cap al nord, passant per l'àrea de Fukushima (tranquils lluny de l'àrea d'exclusió) i amb un parell d'hores ens vàrem plantar allà. La veritat no m'esperava grans desperfectes perquè Sendai no es va veure afectada pel tsunami, ara tot i això em vaig quedar sorprès del bon estat general que hi havia arreu, només alguna esquerda en alguns edificis però per la resta tot ben correcte. Més tard ens van dir que alguns edifici antics els hauran d'aterrar però a banda d'això us asseguro que ningú diria que allà hi va haver el terratrèmol que van tenir, evidentment vulguis no vulguis de seguida em va fer pensar en la situació completament contraposada que s'ha vist a Llorca on el terratrèmol, molt més petit, va causar tot els desperfectes coneguts, tela amb el poder de l'enginyeria antisísmica...
A banda d'això dir-vos que a nivell polític la cosa està calenteta al Japó, aquesta setmana l'hi han fet una moció de censura al primer ministre, Naoto Kan, que la va passar pels pèls però tot sembla indicar que deixarà el càrrec ben aviat. Evidentment a en Kan li està passant factura la mala gestió de tot el tema nuclear, i és que la gent està molt emprenyada allà dalt i amb raó, finalment ja és oficial que la situació a Fukushima no estarà 100% controlada fins al 2012, i de moment doncs continuen treballant-hi però no sembla que evolucioni molt depressa i cada dos per tres tenen alertes a la zona per augment del nivell de radiació...imagineu-vos viure a prop de l'àrea d'exclusió, increible. A Tokyo totes les mesures segueixen indicant valors dins de la normalitat, tranquils.


this week I went up to Tohoku, the closest area from the earthquake. It was a short visit since we just went there for work to visit the university in Sendai, the prefecture's capital. So early morning we took a Shinkansen and headed north, passing by Fukushima area (no worries, far from the exclusion area) and after a couple of hours we were there. To tell you the truth I didn't expect to find much damage in Sendai because it wasn't effected by the tsunami, nevertheless I was really surprised with the perfect condition around, just few cracks in some buildings. Later we were told that some old buildings will have to be demolished because the structure was damaged but besides this no one would say that they had such a big quake, for me obviously it made me compared it against the situation in Spain, in the city of Lorca where with a smaller quake the impact was unfortunately much more bigger...amazing the power of the antisismic engineering...
Besides this, these last days the politics situation in Japan is a hot topic, the prime minister Naoto Kan had a non-confidence motion on wednesday that passed satisfactorily but very tightly, and it seems that he will quit quite soon. Obviously he is having repercussions from the crisis management of the nuclear threat, the criticisms are raising everywhere and with foundations of course, now is official that the situation in the plant won't be fully stable till 2012, for the time being they continue working with it but it doesn't seem evolves rapidly and often they have to raise new alerts for sudden increase of radioactivity level in the area...so just try to imagine what is living nearby the exclusion area nowadays. In Tokyo all measures up to date are within the regular values, don't worry.

La curiositat del dia...ahir anava en bici per Shirokanedai, un barri d'aquí a la vora i de cop passo per davant d'una botiga amb un cartell que posava "Cuinetes"...i jo que em dic "ep que això sona català!", m'hi vaig parar i des de fora ja vaig veure un noi que feia tonta la pinta de ser de la terra i dit i fet, en David que porta un bon grapat d'anys per aquí és el propietari d'aquesta botiga on venen vins i productes delicatessen catalans però també d'altres zones d'Europa. Curiós eh...en fi un bon descobriment i per donar-me el capritxu li vaig comprar carquinyolis fets a Ripoll! (tot i que la distància és un factor subjectiu de gran pes val a dir que estan boníssims :-)

Barça, Barça Barça!!!

Ja la tenim aquí!!!Per si algú encara no se n'ha assabentat el Barça ha guanyat la quarta champions league i com no podia ser menys a Tokyo també ho vem seguir en directe! Això sí el dia se'm va fer moooolt llarg, penseu que aquí el partit va començar a les 3:45 de la matinada i clar jo el dissabte al matí ja em vaig aixecar amb rum-rum de final, a sobre va estar plovent tot el dia o sigui que poc va afavorir a esbargir-me, al vespre vaig anar a sopar amb uns amics a Ebisu però clar a les 21h jo ja estava a punt pel partit i clar encara quedavem 6 hores!!! Cap a les 2am ja no podia aguantar més i vaig fer cap un bar que s'havia que passava el partit i al arribar em trobo una cua a fora i tot de color vermell, si si la majoria del Manchester i jo "collons...", ara un cop a dins la cosa va canviar, estava ple de culers, molts d'ells amb la samarreta del Barça (una amb la d'en Pedrito!) i fins i tot un bon grup de catalans (ja era hora!). El partit excel.lent, un ambient de gal.la i el resultat collonut, hauríeu d'haver vist els  japonesos cantant l'himne amb un català perfecte...efecte Karaoke :-). Al final vaig arribar a casa a les 7 de la matí però amb un somriure que no hi cabia!! (a veure si em reconeixeu a la foto)


Hello, we got it!!!! In case someone is not aware yet, Barcelona won his fourth champions league!!! and of course Tokyo had it live! however it was a very loooong day, just think that here the game started at 3:45am and of course when I woke up on Saturday I was already feeling the sense of the game, in addition it rained all day long so I couldn't do anything but thinking on it, in the evening I when out for dinner in Ebisu with some friends but of course at 9pm I was "mentally" ready for the game and we still had 6 hours ahead for it!! Around 2 am I could wait any longer and I headed to a bar I knew they would have the game but when I got there there was a huge cue outside....red! yeap most of them ManU supporters and I was there with my Barça t-shirt thinking where the hell I was going to...for god's sake once inside surprise....it was full of Barça supporters most of them Japanese )one even with Pedrito's shirt) but also a nice group of Catalans (about time to meet them!) . The game was excellent, nice atmosphere and the best result possible, you should had seen the Japanese singing the Barça hymn with a perfect Catalan...Karaoke effect! :-) At the end I got home around 7 am but grinning from ear to ear!! sobre les màquines vending i la despesa energètica / about vending machines and energy consumption

Avui m'he llevat amb sensacions ambivalents, indignat pels cops de porra que es van deixar anar ahir a Plaça Catalunya però amb la il.lusió de que avui es pugui guanyar la quarta orelluda...tan sols espero que si passa (creuem els dits) no es compliqui més la situació a Barcelona. En fi a tot això, aquí el dia no acompanya sembla que s'acosta l'època de pluges i des d'ahir nit no ha parat de ploure, o sigui que he aprofitat per escriure al blog. Per aquí últimament els debats es centren en quines mesures s'haurien d'aplicar per reduir l'energia...amb la planta de Fukushima parada la producció elèctrica ha baixat i sobretot s'espera que a l'estiu, que és quan hi ha el consum màxim pels aires acondicionats, tinguem problemes importants a Tokyo. L´últim gran debat l'ha engegat el controvertit governador de Tokyo, el Sr. Shintaro Ishihara, un personatge que es destaca per opinions bastant controvertides i la última ha estat qüestionar el negoci de les màquines vending...i no vegis la que s'ha generat, com ja he dit alguna vegada al Japó està ple de màquines vending per tot arreu, es diu que n'hi ha al voltant d'uns 6 milions de les quals la meitat a l'àrea metropolitana de Tokyo, o sigui una màquina per cada 20 persones, té tela te'n trobes per totes bandes, la situació més extrema a davant de casa on estant construint una casa i a dins del recinte n'han instal.lat una, i això que màxim hi treballen 10 paletes!! La majoria de màquines són de begudes, fredes...i calentes, però també és habitual trobar-ne de menjar, fruita, diaris o coses ja més peculiars com, nines, paper de vàter o les famoses calces de segona mà (encara no n'he trobat cap però si realment existeixen ja us faré saber). El que és evident és que aquestes màquiens tenen un consum elèctric moooolt important, o sigui que ja veurem, sincerament però no crec que passi res a no ser que per una vegada per totes es decideixi evaluar la gestió energètica en aquest país i es prepari un pla de mesures conseqüents. 

Today I woke up with ambivalent feeling, outraged by the violence used by the police yesterday with the people of the peaceful demonstration in Barcelona and with the illusion that tonight we can win the fourth champions league...I just wish that if it happens there won't be any more problems. Anyhow, here it definitely seems the rainy season is coming, we had more rain since yesterday so I just thought on writing in the blog.  Lately the discussions here have been focused on which measures should the city apply to reduce energy consumption...with the plant in Fukushima turned down the energy production dropped a lot and above all in summer, when the peak is for the air con, we have important problems in Tokyo. The last discussion came from the governor of Tokyo, Mr. Shintaro Ishihara, a character that stands for his controversial opinions and the last one has been to question the whole business of vending machines...and the war just begun, as I mentioned in previous posts, the vending business in Japan is huge, you have machines everywhere, it is said there may be around 6 million, half of them in Tokyo area, so roughly a machine for each 20 people....amazing and really you find them everywhere, recently I found one in front of my house in a private land where are building a new house and there are no more than 10 builders!! Most of these machines are for beverages, cold and...hot but is usual to find others for food, fruit, newspaper or things more particular like sexy toys, toilet paper or the famous used girls panties (I haven't seen any yet but I let you know when it happens :-)). What is obvious is that these machines have a huuge consumption of energy, so we'll see what happen, honestly I don't expect much unless there is a real intention in the country to evaluate and modify the energy management...

Eikyo, influències japoneses

Hola!! aquest mes ha sortit una nova revista a l'estat espanyol sobre el Japó i la seva cultura, s'anomena "Eikyo, influències japoneses" i és publicada a Barcelona. De moment es publicarà trimestralment i tracta sobre tots tipus de temes d'aquest pais, la seva cultura i societat. En aquest primer número dediquen un reportatge al "The Japan Photo Project", un projecte entre dos fotògrafs (una catalana i un japonès) que s'han passat un any voltant pel Japó i tirant fotos...molt interessant! Ah i si us la compreu...sorpresa! també hi trobareu un servidor en aquest número, hi ha un apartat on fan un petit qüestionari a japonesos vivint allà i catalans vivint aquí :-) 


Hello!!! this month came out a new magazine about Japan and its culture in Spain, called "Eikyo, influències japoneses" is published in Barcelona. For the time being it will be issued every trimester and will cover many types of topics from this country, the culture and its society. In this first issue there is an special on "The Japan Photo Project", a project between two photographs (a catalan girl and a japanese man) who spent one year travelling around Japan and taking pictures....really interesting! Aah and if you buy it...surprise! in this first issue you will also find myself, there is a part where they compare the life of someone from here living there and from there living here, so they contacted me and there i go...:-)

bonica història per un diumenge a la tarda / nice story for a Sunday afternoon

De tornada dels meus donuts m'he topat amb una bona història que es mereix unes línies. Els japonesos són una societat ben particular però si tenen una cosa que no deixa de sorprendre'm és la voluntat d'ajuda altruista que tothom sembla tenir inculcat. Fa uns mesos se'm va ficar al cap de montar una història aquí a casa amb canyes de bambú, o sigui que vaig començar a buscar-ne per les floristeries però sense sort, ningú tenia canyes senceres...un dia però vaig trobar una petita floristeria que en tenia unes quantes a fora a punt per llençar o sigui que me'n vaig anar a la propietària, una senyora gran que no aixecava un pam de terra però desprenia una vida brutal, i amb el meu japonès de supervivència li vaig intentar explicar el què volia...la dona que evidentment li va costar entendre-ho em va escoltar pacientment i hi va acceptar, però no sols això, va netejar i embolicar les canyes i no va pas acceptar que les hi pagués. I a sobre com que amb les canyes i la bici es va adonar que el meu retorn a casa era bastant perillós, es va oferir a portar-me a casa a dins del seu cotxe rotllo Dr.Slump, servidor, bici i canyes!! Increible no? doncs avui sense adonar-me'n he tornat a passar-hi per davant, m'hi he parat i la senyora com suposo cada dia, estava allà tota enfeinada però el millor és que m'ha reconegut! Us pot semblar una tonteria però aquestes coses són les que em fan valorar la meva vida aquí :-)


In my way back with my donuts I bumped into a nice story that deserves few lines. Japanese are indeed a particular society but if there is one thing I always feel with amazement is their will for altruistic help that everyone has well instilled. Some months ago I had the idea to build something at home using bamboo canes, so I began to search them in some flower shops but without success, anyone had entire bamboo canes...one day however, I found a small flower shop that had some which looked to be in the garbage so I went to the owner, a lovely little elderly woman, and with my survival japanese I tried to explain her what I wanted...the woman, who obviously took sometime to understand me, listened patiently and finally accepted, but not only this, she cleaned and wrapped them and didn't want I pay for them. On top of that, since with the canes and the bike she realized my way back home was quite dangerous, she offered herself to give me a lift with her tiny car Dr. Slump style, to home! Amazing isn't it? well, today without noticing it I headed to her place again and she was there, as every single day i guess, and the best thing is that she recognized me!! you may think is quite silly but these are the things that make me appreciate my life here :-)

Donuts...a la japonesa! / Donuts'...japanese way

Diumenge de tranquil.litat i recuperació en certa manera obligat per la ruxada d'aigua que ha caigut a Tokyo, us asseguro que aquí quan plou ho fa de veritat! Sigui com sigui això m'ha permès descobrir un article en una revista que parlava de les millors botigues de donuts de Tokyo, i sobretot perquè una de les millors em queda bastant a prop de casa o sigui que quan ha parat de ploure m'hi he arribat directament a veure què s'oferia. La botiga hara donuts d'estil i disseny molt japonès (simple i natural) està especialitzada en un tipus de donuts diferents als habituals, serien donuts a la japonesa, diuen que utilitzen ingredients a base de soja com tonyu (llet de soja) i l'okara (polpa de soja). El resultat uns donuts de textura més ferma i menys oliosa, que tenen el títol ben marescut, estaven boníssims :-)


Sunday of relax and recovery somehow forced due to the heavy rain we had in Tokyo today, I tell you when it rains here it rains cats and dogs! Anyway thanks to this I had the opportunity to read an article talking about the best donuts shops in town, and above all because one of the best is nearby my place so when the weather turned better I headed to there directly. The shop hara donuts has a style and design very japanese (natural and simple) and its expertise is on a type of donuts different from what we are used to, they are donuts' japanese way. It is said they use ingredients based on soya like tonyu (soy milk) and okara (soy pulp). The result, donuts that are more solid and less greasy that really deserves their title, they were very yummy!!

Atenció el que m'he trobat avui al campus de la universitat....jo anava a comprar alguna cosa per dinar quan de cop començo a sentir crits i cops de tambor i resulta que hi havia una exhibició de "cheerleaders", tal qual...el grup de la uni de Tokyo amb una altra que no he sabut d'on venien. Un espectacle boníssim, els nois super motivats i vestits amb els uniformes tradicionals com ens els anime de tota la vida (qui recorda en chicho terremoto). No us perdeu els 2 personatges que surten darrera les noies...

hey look what I found today at the University....I was going to buy something for lunch when suddenly I heard people shouting and drum beats, it was a cheerleaders exhibition!...Tokyo U. vs another one. A great show, the guys all motivation and wearing the classic uniforms, like the characters from some traditional anime. Don't miss the 2 guys behind the line of girls...

Kaiseki!!

Aquest cap de setmana finalment vaig conèixer i sobretot catar el famós concepte Kaiseki! El tenia apuntat amb lletres majúscules a la llista de coses a fer al Japó però fins ara encara no n'havia tingut la ocasió...més ben dit que pel preu que val un menú kaiseki ho reservava per una ocasió especial, i el millor de tot és que em van convidar!! El kaiseki que segons em van explicar els seus orígens es remonten molt temps enrera on es donava un menú lleugeret per acompanyar la cerimonia del tè, avui dia s'ha convertit en el que podria ser considerat com l'alta cuina japonesa. Els millors restaurants estan a Kyoto i els menús consten de varis plats (nosaltres hem vàrem tenir 9), tipus menú degustació, on sempre se segueix un patró similar i evidentment on no hi falta l'arròs, servit sempre al final per acabar de rematar-ho, us asseguro acabes pleníssim. El Kaiseki es caracteritza per usar ingredients de locals i de temporada, entre d'altres vaig provar bambú, un tipus de medusa o unes algues desconegudes, mmm....boníssim, una gran experiència que exemplifica molt bé el concepte de minimilisme i perfecció que envolta molts aspectes d'aquesta societat.

This weekend I finally went and above all experienced the famous Kaiseki concept! I had it in capital letters in my list of things to do in Japan but to date I haven't had the occasion to went through...or actually I must say that considering the price of a Kaiseki menu I was waiting for an especial occasion, and the best of it is that I went for free!! Kaiseki as I was told, has its origins long time ago when a light menu was given to accompany the tea ceremony, nowadays however it became in what could be considered as the high-standing Japanese cuisine. The best restaurants are in Kyoto and the menus include several dishes (we had 9), like a degustation menu, where they would always follow the similar pattern and of course where you will always find rice, serve at the end when you are already full enough!. Kaiseki is well known to use local, fresh and seasonal ingredients, in our case I had the opportunity to try bamboo, a kind of jelly-fish or a new seaweed,mmm....so yummy, a great experience that really illustrates the concept of minimalism and perfection so well instiled in many aspects of this society.
