Triatló a Ishigaki!!!

Absolute satisfaction. At last the big day came! Sunday, April 22nd, the date I had well underlined in my calendar came true. The date I was waiting since months ago, the day of the famous triathlon in Ishigaki! Where else better than a triathlon in a tropical island of Japan? :) Another little dream that came true, and this time double, first a trip to Okinawa islands, a treasure not so well known in the southern part of Japan and my first participation to an Olympic triathlon!
PhotobucketIshigaki expedition with Ceci, Charlotte and Delfina who came directly from Switzerland. After months of training there were no more excuses. A last night with few hours of sleep and at 05am (!!!) we were all wake up, a good breakfast, last check of our material, we took our bikes and without saying much we headed towards the starting point. It was the first olympic triathlon for all of us and were a bit nervous/tense. At the main area the activity was already lively, 1500 people preparing and arranging their stuff, but all in a quiet atmosphere and very very japanese. After arranging the material and got into our wetsuits we moved to the ports where the swimming race took place. Once there without much time to think on it, I was already waiting in the front line to get into the water, so exciting! Organized in waves of 140 people the participants were jumping in the sea smoothly to do the course of 1500m in a track of two laps.
Photobucket
The swimming part will always remind in my memory, everyone had told us that the very first time was tough but the reality was even worse, people directly try to pass above you, kicking, pushing, a complete stress!! in the first 200m I was completely blocked, I couldn't even breath, it was like I was in a stress of adrenaline and panic rush.  There I tried to keep myself calm and little by little I start to gent into the swim but then when I had got my pace suddenly someone kicked me straight in my face and I lost the goggles and cap at once! Moreover later I got disoriented and lost my track wasting more time, all together with the fact that my technique is not that skilled resulting that I finished it with not that good time (37`)…but at least I finished which was the most important!! Once outside the water, running straight to the transition area, took off the wetsuit and got into the bike to start the 40km. The bike race was another story, much much better, I really enjoyed it, a track all over the island with some parts along the shore, some others more inside into the wild, it had up and downs, all very funny. The good thing of starting from the back is that I spent most of my time overpassing people and this helps to keep you motivated J. Overall I felt very comfortable in the bike, with a good pace and enjoying the race from the beginning till the end. In addition despite the weather wasn´t very good (with some rain), there was quite a lot of people all over the course, particularly lovely grannies that cheered us up with  "gambatte!" "gambarimasu" or "tanoshinde kudasai!", so finally I ended up with a quite acceptable time, 1h25`.  Then back to the transition area, to change shoes and straight to do the running course! Well, more than running the first two km were like trying to move in a rather unsophisticated way, my legs were very heavy and didn`t respond much to my will to run. The 10km track was all over Ishigaki city and was quite flat which help me to improve my pace little by little, so at 5km, I found myself running quite fresh and with strength, it helped as well all these people over the city that cheered us up, some with the traditional Okinawan guitar playing songs or even a group of girls dancing local tropical dances J.  Now I see I was too optimistic, from the 8th km the situation changed, my legs were heavier and had the feeling I was about to get some muscle pain at any moment so the way to the finish line was an eternity. However when I reached the port, there was such a good atmosphere that you find yourself just running without thinking on anything else, and at the end when I crossed the finish line after 48`…well absolute satisfaction! After all this time training, being able to finish, enjoying and doing a time (below 3 hours) beyond my expectations…feels sooo good!! Strongly recommended experience for everyone, I think I found a new hobby :)!.

La passió pels cirerers! - Cherry trees' passion!

at last we finally have again the "hanami" season, meaning the cherry blossom period!! this period of the year where it is socially acceptable to gather with friends and/or family around these trees and in many cases to drink one's fill...but well I keep this subject for another post. Today I want to focus on rather the emotional aspect of this phenomena which I tell you is a complete madness! Last week some cherry trees started blooming but it hasn't been till this weekend that there was a general blooming, it's amazing to see how in just a matter of days everything can change so much, and in fact I've read/heard that is in the ephemeral of the phenomena where it lays its popularity, in a couple of weeks the whole process is done. Indeed with cherry blossom there are gorgeous images although it is also a test of you patience! Hanami means literally "to look at flowers" and this is what all Tokyo decided to do this weekend, for instance not far from my place, along the beautiful Meguro river, a place which usually is well-known for its quietness and calmness but not this period where you have more people than ever!

yakult obachan!!

Following the advice of a friend of mine, today I decided to write some lines of an interesting case in Japan, the Yakult company. Yakult (ヤクルト), was created in the 30s by a microbiologist obsessed with the health effects of certain strains of bacteria. So, Yakult is in its essence a bacteria company, with a broad range of applications such as drinks, cosmetics or drugs. In the food industry, it is well-known to be the very first company to be certified as functional food (the so-called FOSHU certification in Japan). Functional food are those products with health effects beyond the basic supply of nutrients. Yakult obtained the first FOSHU certification in 1993, with their best-seller product, a fermented dairy drink packed in a little bottle containing bilions of a probiotic bacteria which should bring intestinal health effects (I say...because currently in Europe there is the whole debate whether this is really scientifically substantiated but well...this would be another discussion). Japan is Yakult territory, when you go to the supermarket is even difficult to find regular iogurts due to the high penetration of these probiotic products ! Obviously nowadays is not the only company marketing them but still Yakult is a brand with strong value among the society and for many is part of their daily life.

The success of Yakult however, cannot be understood without explaining the phenomena of the "Yakult ladies" (Yakult obachan). This phenomena is a strategy of distribution that Yakult started in the 60s to get into households and companies in a more personalized matter. It certainly includes some elements of social labour as the system is a door-to-door distribution which only employs women that every morning who in the streets of their neighborhood to sell Yakult products by walk, bike, motorcycle or car. I've read that all over Japan there are more than 40.000 Yakult ladies"!! can you believe it? , don't know how much do they represent in sales turnover but it seems it must work because the system is also used in other countries overseas. In any case to me, it is obvious that beyond the numbers there is an intangible benefit of brand value very interesting!

Perfeccionisme laboral - work perfectionism

Sunday afternoon. I went out for a walk and right at the corner there was some builders working (yes, they also work on Sunday), as usual there was an assistant in front of the building to control the safety and pedestrians' circulation, this time however, as there was some water dropping from their work the man had an umbrella to protect and walk along with all pedestrians and avoid that even a simple drop could splash them! Just great...these people still amaze me!

In Japan even the commercials have a touch of uniqueness and amongst them theres particularly one campaign that are the funniest, these are the commercials of one of the phone companies, Softbank, who since some years ago started to advertise its family plan through the image of a surrealistic family, the mother is a japanese woman, the daughter a Japanese pop-star singer, the son an African-american man and finally the best, the father is an adorable dog who became a complete celebrity and people even put a name on him, ¨kai-kun¨! The campaign has been so successful that now it's been years on-going  and the dog became the image of the company up to the point it is used in all their communication and they even developed some merchandising with it. Lately the family grew up with a new member who is a famous Japanese model.

Below some of the funniest commercials. The first one is one of the latest where the promotion was to get a new bike for all new costumers, really good, I still laugh everytime I see it !

Entrenant a la platja! - Training on the beach!

Sunny Sunday on the beach!! Yes, it's end of March and I've already been in the beach! but, neither I'm crazy nor we have summer weather yet but well as I subscribed in a triathlon due to in some weeks, it was time to train in real conditions in the sea and try my new wetsuit :)!! So I headed to Kamakura, a little seaside town with lots of history-cultural sightseeing points but also known for its surfers and windsurfers, I put my equipment and into the water! The experience quite positive, nothing to do with swimming in the pool, chilly water and dangerous surfers, if you are not aware these people can really hurt oneself! Here some pics I took in this wonderful day.

Menus asequibles a primera vista- Affordable menus at first glance

and after the touristic-cultural post, some lines of professional related stuff. Malaysia, as many other developing countries, is in a process of economic growth with all the pros and cons that goes along, fast urbanization, lifestyle changes and also a period of nutrition transition. Dietary patterns are evolving quickly and with them new concerns on public health, many in form of metabolic disorders such diabetes (estimated around 11.5%, one of the highest in the Asia) or obesity/overweight (particularly notorious the childhood evolution). The answer to this situation is complex and multifactorial however walking around KL it stands-out the important communication campaigns made by some international fast-food companies like KFC or McDonalds, and particularly what it drew most my attention and to me explains many things, is the price of food items in these places. For instance, can you believe that the price of a BigMac Menú (with french fries and soft drink) is at 9RM (¥250 o 2.3€)?? Hard to believe but true, I was astonished when I saw it!! The campaign called "McValue Menu" seems to be in place as well in other Asian countries, and well to me...this is not the right direction, here there is a misunderstanding with the concept of preventing malnutrition, one thing is to promote affordable nutrition to avoid "desnutrition" and the other put in place practices like this that just promote "overnutrition". Dark future in sight....

Yummy Kuala Lumpur!!

Hola! després d'estar desconnectat uns dies ja torno a estar per aquí. Aquesta setmana he estat a Kuala Lumpur i tot i que hi anava per feina, m'he pogut escapar a estones per captar l'aire d'aquesta ciutat.

Hi!! after some days away, I'm back to Tokyo. This week I've been in Kuala Lumpur and although I went there for work I could take some time to visit around and get a touch of this city. Every time I go to SE Asia I got memories of the Asia I knew, hot and humid weather, chaotic traffic, street life, social contrasts and activity, lots of activity! Kuala Lumpur, despite is much more organized than other cities of the region, it's not an exception. It has a downtown at the hype of economic expansion with the famous Petronas towers as the icon and just 15 minutes walking, neighborhood fighting with poverty and facing a complete different life, good example of the traditional pattern in many of developing countries. Malaysia is very interesting from the cultural point of view since there are several ethnic groups present in their population, either Malay, Chinese or Indian, all of them with a strong idiosyncrasy, particularly exemplified in the food...mmm so yummy these local dishes!!

Visions post 03.11!

Coinciding with March 11, the FCCJ presented a weekend of audiovisual material related to the tragic incident. With the title "Hope captured on film", documentaries, movies and short-films made after the accident were shown. Below some of the highlights:

  • The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom ( Dir. Lucy Walker, USA, 2011).

  • Pray for Japan (Dir. Stu Levy, USA, 2012) (trailer).

  • Radioactivists: Protest and Discourses in Japan Since Fukushima (Dir. Julia Leser and Clarissa Seidel, Germany/Japan, 2011) (trailer).

Avui fa un any.... - Today it's been a year

March 11, 2012, today is a year since the triple disaster of Japan, an earthquake of richter magnitude-9.0 , the maximum possible, followed by a Tsunami with waves 15m high that devasted everything in its path and finally the nuclear crisis with the accident in Fukushima. A year has passed by, a year where many things have been done, where others were not done and probably where many could or should had been done much better. Today however, it was a day to think and tribute memory to all those that were gone, as much as thousands, never seen since WWII. Since the beginning of this week, the atmosphere was charged with a very commemorative tone, plenty of articles, reports, documentaries in the news and many other activities were held. In Tokyo, the peak has been at 02:46pm at Hibiya park, exact time of the earthquake, when a minute of silence was held in memorial of all and each one of the victims of this tragic accident. Below a video of this moment, very solemn and touchy, even with many people crying, which is something rare in a culture where real emotions are usually kept inside. After this, the memorial was followed by different concerts but it also started a more demanding part with anti-nuke demonstrations followed by many people which had its highest point in front of TEPCO's offices, the company managing Fukushima's plant and the n.1 public enemy nowadays. From now on, we will have to see how the situation evolves, currently 52 of the 54 reactors are shut down, so the question is not only about nuclear but rather about energy as a whole, how is this country going to do to replace the nuclear energy? and here is where personally I have more doubts, because at the end all goes to the basics, meaning the energy policy and culture's , and here even after this tremendous accident...I believe that things have changed very little and even worse, I don't see a general will of changing.

Recordant el 03.11 - Souvenir of 11.03

This week will be a year since the big disaster that began with the earthquake. Since some days ago the atmosphere it feels quite diffeernt, aticles, images, documentaries, all to bring a memory to this event that changed the history. Yesterday I received this simulation made by japanese that is really worth to look at.  It's a 6 minutes movies simulating all earthquakes during 2011 in the Japan area...19349 quakes in a year!!! Unbelievable but true, in a regular situation we would have had about 5500 quakes, last year you had 4 times fold and of course of much higher intensity...this give you an idea of what was about being in Japan the weeks and months following the big one. Don't miss it and turn up the volume!.

Esquí a Naeba - Ski in Naeba!

Hey I'm back after a long weekend of ski!! My second time skiing in the Japanese mountains and the first of the year. If last year we went to the current number one location, in Niseko, this year we headed to Naeva, a station very close to Tokyo that had its momentum...but 15 or 20 years ago! And well this you could easily noticed with a town filled with buildings of doubtful style souvenir of better times. At the end however, the most important the snow was as usual really good!!

In three days we had all kinds of weather, from snow to rain or a great sunny day!

Don't know because it was that station was rather old but I tell you that there was plenty of people with a kind of old-fashioned style really interesting...it reminded me that year that with my friends we dressed up like the skiers of the 80...

In Japan, neither fondue, nor raclette nor tartiflette...but the food is as "healthy" as in Switzerland!! I ate a huge "chickenkatsu"!!

The best of skiing in Japan...after a tough day of ski there is nothing else better that ending in an Onsen, the public baths you find everywhere in the mountains....best option to recover!
