Sumoooo!

This Saturday was time for Sumo! As there was the tournament in Tokyo, I took the opportunity and went the last day but one (tournaments last 15 days!), and well even though it wasn't the final, there were already many things going on and the intensity of the wrestlers was palpable. This was my second sumo experience and thus this time I could notice more details that never catch before. Sumo is a curious sport....obviously there are many things that I don't get but it is clear that is not the sport with most continuity and higher adrenaline for a fan, actually more than one or two fell asleep for while :_). Nevertheless I think it's quite interesting, the seriousness surrounding the show, all the formal aspects before beginning a fight, the psychological game between wrestlers and suddenly the clash of two human being mass of huge power but not less technique. As usual however, the best is the crowd, in their style of Japanese expressivity is very funny to see how their exclamations go "in crescendo" with a close fight.
Here some pics of the day and a video in case someone wants to see what are 5 minutes of Sumo, hey is not any video...this was the last fight of the day between Hakuho and Baruto! Btw, the winner of the tournament was the Mongolian beast Hakuho who would be like Messi in sumo ;)...

Tifó!! - Typhoon!!

Hey, for those that haven't heard about it, this week we had another natural hazard in Japan, this time was a typhoon, Roke who is the second of the season but this was much stronger since it passed by closer to mainland leaving a big impact behind, especially in Nagoya. Thousands of evacuees, trains and public transport blocked and winds up to 200kph. This typhoon took me in Kyoto (yes..again!) with the relatives' visit of September, lots of rain and strong wind but nothing else of importance. However when we returned to Tokyo we easily saw the typhoon effect there had been much stronger, many broken umbrellas in the streets, branches and even fallen trees. You see, in Japan we have everything! The saddest part is the minimal international media coverage it has had, although being of higher intensity that the famous "Irene" hurricane that passed by USA few weeks ago...this is how the system works.

Dormir en un taüt? - To sleep in a coffin?

This post is dedicated to one of the most unique "hotels" of Japan, the 9hours in Kyoto. It is a design capsule hotel which deserves a visit if you come around. The capsule hotels are a kind of traditional japanese accommodations usually located in large cities and intended for costumers who just want to rest some hours and not pay much. The particular aspect, as its name shows, is that you don't sleep in regular rooms but capsules, a space with a certain air of coffin that can give an apprehensive feeling. In my last visit to Kyoto I could finally visit the famous 9 hours, well-known to have an amazing design for a hotel capsule. The concept is simple, 9 hours to sleep, take a shower and some rest. Even though the price is higher than other capsules the experience deserves it, minimalistic design and neutral colours, all very think out and the capsules awesome, it looked like you were in one of this futuristic movies. When we got there, we were alone in our corridor, so we thought it would be a quiet night...error! It was a Friday and around 01 am several "salarymen¨arrived quite tipsy... and making considerable racket...luckily is Japan and when we told them to shut up, they did it right after :-)

Albada al Fuji! - Sunrise at Fuji!

And after Kyoto...one of the most surrealist experiences in Japan! It was Saturday afternoon when we decided to leave, arriving to Fuji at midnight (the famous 5th station) and then as if we were going for a short walk, we took the equipment and started to climb the mountain, about 4 hours of climbing, sunrise at the summit, three more hours of descend and heading directly to Tokyo sleepless...soooo tough!! If last year I climbed it from Kawaguchiko trail, this year we took Fujinomiya, a shorter trail but tougher too, especially the last part...and all hiking by night with just few spots of light from the frontal-light of the hikers. Even though the official season to climb Fuji was over (July-August), when we got to the summit there was a nice number of people, far from being joyful, the atmosphere around was like a funeral because at 3700m, at night and with a glacial wind...the temperature was freezing! Don`t remember how long we had to wait there but the image of everybody sitting in the floor suffering the cold will be a memory for long time, likewise when the first rays of sunlight appeared and the sky started to break, it was like a divine apparition! Then we climbed quickly to the highest point (3776m) and from there, at the top of Japan with the crater in front and a layer of white clouds below, the sun started to raise with a sequence of gorgeous images that made us to forget about the cold, sleep, and tiredness and just enjoy those unique moments...and on top of that it was Sept. 11th, which for catalans has a special meaning because is our national day so of course we also celebrated it :-)

Weekend a Kyoto!

Photobucket Finally I got a while in between visits to tell you about few new things from these last busy days. This last weekend I rent a car (first time and driving left side with japanese signs = danger!!), and headed with two friends from Catalonia to Kyoto. I love this city, everytime I go there is even better! This time we also rented bikes and spend our time riding around...it is a very convenient and easy way to explore Kyoto. At the end it was a quick but intense visit where we even had time for a karaoke session in one of these bars that don't leave you indifferent...the owner, two japanese and us singing our best, great experience!

Cervesa i xuxes! / Beer & candies!

This last Friday I went to one of the most peculiar bars in Tokyo, located in Ebisu it's a bar transformed into a candies ("okashi") shop of the 80's. So, for the price of a drink (expensive though) you can fill you with all kinds of traditional sweets all while watching an old anime classic like "Oliver and Benji". The selection of candied is really interesting, from traditional sweets like doriyaki to others of more doubtful taste for a non-Japanese like dry squid skewers or plum pickles!! The image of Friday night with salarymen in their beer mood eating tones of sweets is priceless...

Yoshihiko Noda

Surprise at the Japanese parliament. Yesterday the substitute of Naoto Kan as PM was elected, the sixth in 5years...this is what we mean by political stability!! There was 5 candidates from the DPJ party with two clear favorites by the media, Maehara san (foreign, young man representing the renovation) and Kaiera san (economy, supported by a strong group in the party with corruption affairs). However, at the end the elected was Noda san (finances), and this from what I read in the news seemed to be a surprise. So, I've doing a bit of working field asking my colleagues their opinion on this...a new PM is not something we see everyday!! Could you believe that 100% of the answers were not following this subject at all and told me they have little or no interest on it! A new cultural difference with myself, true that my participants were quite young but my general feeling here in Japan is that there is not much interest for politics in the society...anyway Mr. Noda has a huge challenge ahead, a country immerse in economic crisis, nuclear and energetic crisis and above all with the rebuilding of the devastated area by the tsunami. To start with, he said he is going to be courageous and take the right decisions and already said is going to rise tax. A good start.

Vacances en terra salvatge!! / Holidays into the Wild!!

Hola!!! Jo he fet la versió light...

Hello!!! I'm back after some days of holidays...yeap, holidays and another little dream in Japan achieved...the buddhist pilgrimage route of Kumano kodo in the region of Wakayama, a peninsula east of Kyoto with an amazing natural landscape! For comparison, this  route in Japan would be like the St.James route in Spain with a history of more than 1000 years. The ancient pilgrims started their route in Kyoto, with a journey that lasted weeks and went through dense forests until arriving to the shrines. I did a light version...

Photobucket

In fact there is a network of possible routes but nowadays everything is connected by road so generally people visits it in a day by car, nevertheless for the few we decide to walk, usually the trail starts in Tanabe, a town in the coastline and from there you get towards the mountains in a journey of 80-100km to visit the three shrines, Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha and especially Kumano Nachi Taisha with its awesome waterfall, the biggest in japan

Photobucket
As a result, 4 days walking into mountains, almost alone (I hardly saw anyone in the forests), the nature and I...an experience highly recommended, sometimes tough, especially when you spend two hours going up with 25% steep but gratifying as well when you keep on and achieve new milestones. The route is kept in a very good condition even considering some parts are from ancient times, with the traditional stone path covered with mold that gives a lovely bucolic sense. And on top, just thinking that the same pathway was done in the past by thousands of people, all types of people walking during weeks in very tough conditions as an exercise of worship and purification...well it really gives you a nice sense of spirituality

Besides the spiritual side, these days have been filled with lots of adventures, with animals of all kinds, with stifling sun and rain (almost flood!), with hidden streams and  ponds, sleeping in minshukus (small B&B) and practicing Japanese (!!), and taking a bath in Onsens from the mountains. As I'm saying really recommended experience.

Beer-garden time!

August and we have the summer back again...I had forgotten this stifling heat!! I swear it, do you know what is getting out of home in the morning and the time to go to the station you are already sweating like hell?? and this at 8am!! and  like this everyday...but yet, one of the summer essentials are the so called "beer-garden" or what's the same outdoors dinners in parks or terraces...yes, when I was told about them I couldn't believe it, who wants to go there? I tell you even at night the temperature is better inside than outside...but anyway if it is popular I had to try it and frankly the experience is not bad, up to the point I have repeated! This week I went with some friends at the "beer-garden" in Roppongi, which the area with the highest concentration of foreigners per square meter, and as it was a weekday the place was full of "salarymen" (remind this name as I gonna talk largely about them soon). The concept then is very simple even a bit tacky for Japanese standards, beer, beer and more beer and in between a range of food with plenty of dishes with little history in Japan ;-)
